One may easily go past the Arlington County Detention Facility without noticing a multistory building that has reflective windows is actually a jail that has 200 employees that secure and hold a typical inmate population of approximately 500 inmates (slightly larger male-to-female population). Burrowed between multiple office and apartment buildings, is the jail located at 1435 N. Courthouse Road, and it is conveniently situated within a block from the Courthouse Metro station and the courthouse where the criminals are tried. On a recent tour of the facility with my classmates and I took on October 15, 2015, we got the opportunity to tour the jail in its entirety, learn about the booking and jail assignment process, while experiencing the daily
The Wabash County Jail was built in 1979, and is meant to hold 72 people at maximum capacity. The Miami County Jail was built in 2009, and is meant to hold 240 at maximum capacity. These two jails being significantly different in setup, their security, and their cells will be discussed in this paper. Their differences are due mainly to the time period they were built in, and the funding dedicated to the jail.
On April 21st, 1930, Ohio State Penitentiary, which was built in Ohio’s capital, Columbus, in 1834, caught fire and killed hundreds of inmates. When returning for the night, they discovered that a fire was started within cell blocks G and H. It was only after the fire had been doused, that everyone had realized that the scaffolding, on the outside walls of those cell blocks, was what had caught fire. At the time, the prison was known for its poor conditions. The prison was only meant to hold 1,500 people, but at the time of the fire, it was housing 4,300 inmates. This disaster goes down in history as the worst fire at any prison in the United States.
Prison housed a diverse and unique range of different kinds of inmates. The townspeople of Yuma, Arizona perceived the Yuma territorial prison as a favorable and luxuries prison. The townspeople of Yuma, Arizona even called the Yuma Territorial prison the “Country Club on the Colorado” because of the benefits it gave the inmates and the community. One reason the prison was perceived in this way was because the cloths the inmates warn were a heave blue and white striped shirt and pants .

Surprisingly, a number of jails and state prisons across the country are in the middle of a heated crisis. A high percentage of the jails and prisons are dealing with antiquated communication systems that place the institution at risk. An institution without a strong communication system is a danger to the inmates and the personnel in the institution. Therefore, it should not come as a surprise that the city of Struthers plans to close their city jail. They decided to take this strategic step instead of making improvements to the communications system within the jail along with other outstanding issues.

The inner moral compulsion to obey is what drives most social organizations. Sykes (2007) described several structural defects that occurred in the New Jersey State prison. Sykes (2007) argues that power in prison is not based on authority therefore prison officials have to find other means to get prisoners to abide by the rules and regulations. The ability to use force to maintain order on a large scale in the prison is an illusion. According to Sykes (2007), Certain privileges such mailing and visiting, personal possessions, time-off for good behavior etc. are given to the inmate all at once upon his or her arrival to the prison.
This website covers the issue of prison overpopulation. This issue affects prisons all across the country. The first feature the website provides a list of each of the fifty states. Choosing a state will take you to a page that provides the number of incarcerated prisoners currently being held and the total cost to run the prison per day. The website also has a section that has articles explaining why prison overcrowding is a problem.
The correctional staff at Ohio State prison are doing the best job they can with the little support and no training in mental health. The officers on the street have little or no training with mental health issues, so when they are on the street they have to be really care with the suspects because no one very knows what state of mind they are in. The Correctional Staff always have to be on their toes because they never know what to except for the person who has been locked up in solitary confinement. They have little resource on how to take care of a mental person, because to them when an inmate acts up they are punished with solitary confinement.
The city of Yuma, Arizona is not a city that catches tourists eyes a lot, but every once in a while it does and one of the reasons people notice Yuma is because of the Yuma Territorial Prison. The Yuma Territorial Prison has been through thick and thin and is still standing today, a century and a half later(Murphy 1). The prison is no longer functioning, but it still manages to lure people in, not by breaking the law, but by its historical significance. The prison is unique in design and the impact it has had not just in Yuma, but in Arizona as a whole. The Yuma Territorial Prison today, as a museum, allows people to examine the design of the prison and how it reflects the time and place it was built, the negative effects the prison has caused
Additionally, present living conditions in prisons and jails are more humane than the living conditions Equality suffered through. For instance, cells in modern day prisons and jail have bedding, a sink, toilet, and desk for inmates who stay overnight or over a long period of time. In any case, present prisons and jails require inmates to wear clothing, 3Mourad most of the time inmates are given jumpsuits, underwear, undershirts, pants, shirts, shoes and a jacket. In any type of modern prisons or jails, inmates can eat three times a day for proper
Prison Problems in the U.S. The United States have the biggest incarceration rate in the world. Our prisons are full of convicts, rapists, and murderers. One of our biggest problems are is that we don't have enough money too feed them and keep a roof over their heads. Another issue is the proportion of middle aged men in our country are either black or hispanic.
Does it make sense to lock up 2.4 million people on any given day, giving the U.S the highest incarceration rate in the world. More people are going to jail, this implies that people are taken to prison everyday for many facilities and many go for no reason. People go to jail and get treated the worst way as possible. This is a reason why the prison system needs to be changed. Inmates need to be treated better.
Additionally, in an attempt to foster an increase in professionalism within the correctional community, care and consideration must be taken with the care and housing of inmates both privately operated and those operated by some branch of the government. “The quality of prisons has improved from the past, but there continue to be too many inhumane new prisons. New construction does not always result in a prison conductive to humane incarceration” (Bartollas,
