Did you know refugees go through many challenges? A refugee is a person who has been forced to leave their country in order to escape war or a natural disaster. Ha, a refugee, is a ten year old girl that lived in South Vietnam. When war come to her home, her family moved aboard a refugee boat. Ha belongs to the novel Inside Out and Back Again. Ha and many other refugees face many challenges when fleeing their homes which turns their lives inside out and they eventually go back to the way they were.
Many refugees face the challenge of losing part of their family which turns their lives inside out. In the text, it said, “After I found out about my father’s death, everything seemed so useless. I couldn’t see any future for myself”(Brice 9). This shows that after Amela father’s death, she missed him and felt useless without him. Also in the book, it said, “Wish Father would come home so I can stop daydreaming that he will appear in my classroom in a white navy uniform and extend his hand toward me for all my classmates to see”(Lai 31). Ha wishes her father would come home from the war and appear in her classroom. Ha also said, “Mother pulls me close and pats my head. Father watches over us even if he’s not

In the text, “Refugee Transitions’ World of Difference Benefit Luncheon”, it said, “But here in the United States, my community continues to struggle”(Gurung 4). This shows that Til’s life went back like it was when they entered the U.S. Also in the book, it said, “The sugar has melted of leaving plump moist chewy bites. Hummm… Not the same, but not bad at all”(Lai 234). The papayas Ha have are not like the ones she had back in Saigon. Ha also says, “She makes me memorize one new word a day and practice it ten times in conversation”(Lai 166). Ha is adapting to Alabama with the help from Miss Washington. Once Ha gets fully adapted to Alabama, she would feel like it was her old
