If you were a refugee and you just had to flee america and leave everything and home due to a war would you be scared. I know I would have been, refugees have to deal with this all the time. This would affect people in different ways such as metally and emotionally. In the book Inside Out and Back Again by Thanhha Lai Ha, the main character struggles with feeling accepted and feeling that she is not loved. This could relate to real life refugee’s. These are similar because of the fact that real life refugee’s might not feel accepted with their home’s because they might not speak the language and they could be threatened by others. For example, In the book Inside Out and Back Again by Thanhha Lai she goes through terrible conditions because of a war in her hometown Saigon. She was led upon a boat with terrible conditions and going across the ocean to the U.S. Lai states, “In the dark a nudge here a nudge there and we end up back on the first ship in the same spots with two mats” (66). In addition, in the article “I Live In a Refugee Camp'' by Christen Lewis shows how little essentials refugees had and how they had to survive on basically nothing. Lewis states, “They arrived in Ethiopia with little more than the clothes they were wearing.” (6). Early in the novel Ha realizes the communists are coming to take over her hometown Saigon and they realize they are in danger so they plan to flee. Ha plans to flee to the U.S. by boat in secret but word spreads and mass amounts of people pile on the boat. Similarly, Bilan had to flee to Ethiopia because of a drought and a war. These two are connected by their struggle of fleeing their hometown’s because of war’s this caused them to feel very sad metally and emotionally. Furthermore, in the book Inside Out and Back Again Ha finally starts to feel accepted and she has friends now. All of a sudden everyone is nice to her. Lai states,“Two students run into class, giggling. I firm my muscles, ready for the giggles to explode into laughter thrown at me. But smiles appear instead.” (Lai 184). In the speech by Til Gurung his wife struggles to go anywhere because she can not speak good english. Now one year later and an amazing tutor, she has the confidence to go anywhere. Gurung states, “Refugee Transitions assigned Mari to tutor my wife. After a year of tutoring, these things are no longer a big problem for her. Now she has more confidence and more language skills to help herself and our family.” Gurung.In example, In the middle of the novel Ha gets bullied by ungrateful kids that do not know what she is going through. Ha is annoyed with the U.S. and she keeps thinking of her father, her papaya tree, and Saigon. In addition to that Gurung thought he had no chance of ever feeling at home again until he got to the U.S. Even though the U.S. was at its lowest he and his wife did not give up and they pushed through.
