Instructional Toolkit: Social Studies Tool
In this assignment, a social studies tool was created to support social studies instruction. It addressed understanding how historical people, patriots and good citizens helped shape our nation. The social studies tool was implemented with a first grade student. A reflection of the impact of the social studies tool was written.
Targeted Skill
The targeted skill is to identify how historical figures helped shape the community, state and nation.
Targeted Grade Level The targeted grade level is first grade.

1.2 History The student understands how historical figures, patriots, and good citizens helped shape the community, state, and nation. The student is expected to: (B) identify historical figures such as Alexander Graham Bell, Thomas Edison, Garrett Morgan, and Richard Allen, and other individuals who have exhibited individualism and inventiveness;

I chose to incorporate a graphic organizer and handwriting paper to help the student communicate more effectively. The objective of this activity is to help the student identify facts about historical figures such as Alexander Graham Bell helped shape our nation. This strategy aligns with the needs of my student by allowing my student a hands-on activity using a graphic organizer and handwriting paper to organize his thinking and structure his writing.
Materials
The materials used in the assignment were a graphic organizer, American Hero video: Alexander Graham Bell, Alexander Graham Bell: a photo illustrated biography by Greg Linder, scissors, glue, and construction paper.
