Jazmine, Great forum post this week on your assigned yes perspective in regards to evolutionary psychology (EP). Although, I personally don’t rely on just one theory, after reading your post I gained a better understanding of EP, and was intrigued to conduct more research. It has been argued that evolutionary psychology may provide a metatheory for psychology and the other social sciences, however, evolutionary psychology is considered to be an overarching theory whose principles can be applied to all fields in the social sciences (Ploeger, 2010). While I will not deny the fact that within the past years EP has been successful as its own discipline, it is not a comprehensive theory for psychological concepts. The main reason as to why is due to the lack of substantial evidence regarding cognition and psychological mechanisms being adaptation (Ploeger, 2010). While there are studies and research out there that provide an evolutionary hypotheses but there is still no research or studies created to attain this evidence.
A recent article I read in Integral Review by Wallis (2010) stated that “What we seem to have overlooked is that a science, much like a bird, must have two strong wings if it is to fly. Empirical facts are understood in the light of a specific theory... And, theory is built from a careful consideration of the facts”.
