“The greatness of a man is not in how much wealth he acquires, but in his integrity and his ability to affect those around him positively” - Bob Marley. The words ethics and integrity often go hand-in-hand. To be a person of ethics and integrity is to be honest and who embraces moral principles, no matter the circumstances of the situation. To me ethics and integrity are qualities that are the fundamental to any profession, and the key to living a fulfilling life.
I hope to one day have career in the field of medicine, as a Physical Therapist. In the last decade there have been multiple reports of doctors compromising patient care for their own personal benefit. Experimental drugs, drug abuse, unnecessary surgeries, and pure neglect have caused countless deaths of innocent people who thought they were receiving good medical treatment. These doctors however, took advantage of vulnerable patients for their own financial gain. Many Americans now refuse to seek medical treatment, for fear that they too will be victims of selfish acts conducted by medical professionals. I make my decisions based upon a standard of honesty, fairness, and transparency. Treating customers, suppliers and employees with honesty and integrity is not only the ethical thing to do, but very sound business. As a consumer, I expect those I do business with to conduct themselves ethically, regardless of whether those standards are readily evident. I will be much more inclined to support a business who openly addresses their issues and is forthcoming with problems (i.e. Chipotle) than a business who attempts to circumvent fair regulations through deception (i.e. Volkswagen). Both businesses have issues, but I see exceedingly different approaches from an integrity and ethical
