Discourse 200 has affected my development as a writer in a few ways. I have come to learn and obtain a better understanding of how institutional and cultural identities are identified in the way they have been delivered through literature. Not only, has this course taught me about writing but it also taught me more about myself as a writer as far as my interests, weaknesses and strengths go. There are three papers included in this writing portfolio that are reflective of me as a writer. The papers make known of the struggles that I have encountered while writing, but they are also a representative of my growth and improvement in the class.
Especially since racism is already embedded in most of our mind, even if we don't realize it. Everyone has categorized another person in one way or another. We see this struggle of morality in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. The main character Hucks goes on an adventure with a runaway slave in the 1800’s. After spending several weeks bonding with a slave named Jim, Huck says “I knowed he was white inside” which is extremely important because Huck discovers that we are all the same inside (Twain).
Throughout the world racism happens daily, making others feel badly about themselves because of ignorant people. As a matter of fact we cannot choose the color of our skin, we cannot choose the way we look, but we can choose how we act towards others. In the article Racism: It’s Deeper Than The Color of Our Skin, defines racism as “a political, social and economic system built on the belief that one race is superior to another. ”(Racism)
Critical Analysis The word discrimination can be used in many ways as the contrast between groups of people, neither good nor bad. In todays society racial discrimination has more of a negative description. It can be defined as the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people, especially over ethnical background and color. Over time discrimination has been viewed by many people and is considered unjust.
“Obama, his campaign, and his ‘success’ are the outcome of forty years of racial transition from the Jim Crow racial order to the racial regime (that the author refers) to as ‘new racism,’” (p.259). In other words, Obama getting elected wasn’t some sort of miracle; it’s been an occurrence a long time in the making. It also does not show “how far we’ve come as a nation.” In fact, since Obama’s start in 2008, racism has remained firmly in place, and has even become a more daunting of an obstacle to overcome.
In so many of my interactions I am included, whether it be because of fear, obligation or true desire, and because of this I am able to carry a confidence in myself that others cannot. One of the many reasons structural racism is so destructive is that when someone on the opposite side of the spectrum from me experiences constant rejection, disclusion or even suppression, it has a huge impact on how they view themselves and therefore how the world views them. African-Americans have always endured discrimination throughout history. In 1879 and 1880, a large number of Southern blacks traveled to Kansas pursuing freedom from violence, economic opportunity, political equality and access to education. Although these 40,000 to 60,000 individuals were courageous to reach Kansas many ended up as inexperienced laborers. In 1900, they possessed a smaller fraction of land than they had at the end of Reconstruction. Black males were prohibited from employments in offices such as clerks and from administrative positions in workshops and factories.
There are people that exist today that were raised into holding a racist opinion on different ethnic groups. Through the symbolic interactionism perspective, racism can be resolved. Racism formed many years ago due to people interacting and sharing opinions about others. From the first day a person is born, they begin to adapt to their social worlds around them, beginning with their family. A persons’ family is the first social world they are exposed to for a majority of their lifetime.
“ According to the National Association of Social Workers Web site, racism is “the ideology or practice through demonstrated power or perceived superiority of one group over others by reasons of race, color, ethnicity, or cultural heritage....” The definition further goes on to note that “racism is manifested at the individual, group, and institutional level.” (Blank, 2013) Despite how much time has passed by, racism continues to be a huge issue today. We see it every day, some have even been confronted by racial discrimination, or racial slurs even. We see how the system could be for example: how blacks continue to get more severe punishments or blacks have higher the chance to get criminally sentenced than whites.
Racism/Discrimination: From Facts to Fiction Racism has been a big epidemic since the early 1600’s and is still a problem throughout society today. According to Dictionary.com, racism is a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human racial groups determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to dominate others or that a particular racial group is inferior to the others. The Tortilla Curtain, by T.C. Boyle exemplifies racism and discrimination by the dividing of communities from the impoverished minorities and the superior majority. Boyle reveals how more fortunate people stereotype the way minorities and poverty live rather than acknowledging
The study of racism has a profound potential to become an ambiguous sociological endeavor. Incidentally, accounting for the multitude of factors which encompass this subject appear to make it the very heart of the matter and consequently the most time consuming. Although, it is my belief that all three of the main sociological theories (Functionalism, Conflict Theory and Symbolic Interactionism) should be integrated in order to achieve a legitimate and quantifiable outcome, for obvious reasons the “Conflict Theory” logically renders the best possible method to obtain a valid micro analysis of specific agents in this case. The oxford dictionary defines racism as being: prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one’s own race is superior; a belief that all members of each race possesses characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races.
Racism like other sociological concepts has existed throughout human’s history. It is defined as the conviction that a particular race is superior to the other according to their moral and social characteristics. This term is often negatively viewed, especially in terms of morals; therefore, if somebody appears to be a racist, he or she is described as unworthy or immoral. The believe that passage of civil rights legislation did away with racially discriminatory practices has made most white Americans and African Americans to lack recognition that racism exists. Wellman, (1993) emphasizes that race is a solemn category in America, how one is racially chosen greatly affects the experience of being an American.
Racism: a curse for the society INTRODUCTION:- "Racism is an ideology that gives expression to myths about other racial and ethnic groups that devalues and renders inferior those groups that reflects and is perpetuated by deeply rooted historical, social, cultural and power inequalities in society." Racism is one of the oldest truth around the world .Racism, is said to be as old as the human society. Racism is nothing but only the belief that all members of each race possess the characteristics, abilities, or qualities which are specific to that race, especially, so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races. And this differentiation change the people’s mentality and bring death among themselves.
Racism is an ever growing issue in the world, and something we can’t hide behind. According to dictionary.com the defintion of racism is: “the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics, abilities, or qualities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races.” Race was created socially by how people perceive ideas and faces people are not used to yet. It is the “hatred” of one person to another individual, solely based on that person's belief that the person is inferior because of their language, birthplace and skin colour. Racism is an issue that has lasted throughout history, providing justification for a group’s dominance over another.
