Although our country, The United States of America, was founded on independence and a quest for personal freedoms, interdependence is a key part of our communities and needed throughout our life. Our society has built up a stigma towards being dependent, claiming it demonstrates weakness and exhibits a lack of maturity. While this is a contrived fallacy, many believe it, and are afraid of admitting they need other people in their life. As such, our country needs to place less of an emphasis on self-reliance and independence. Due to our human nature to make mistakes and our imperfections, it is crucial and almost a basic life necessity to have people that you can depend on and use as an safety net. Throughout our growth from infantry to adulthood, we create important and vital relationships with people we can trust and lean on in times of dire need. While the main purpose of these organizations is to focus on worship, a bond between members is formed, similar to that of a large family. The community will allow you to depend on each other in dark times. By moving our country in a direction of personal independence, we will be encouraging citizens to no longer take part in these groups. One important example of a religious organization acting as a interdependent community would be that of a Church in Haiti. After Haiti had suffered a devastating earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0, many homes were destroyed and family members lost.
