In everyday conversations a subject that frequently tends to arise is American politics. During these conversations a variation of sub topics often occur usually pertaining to the Army’s funding, elections, and the different political parties. One of these topics that tends to cause a lot of feuding is the different political parties. In my family alone, we partake in disputes based on our different political parties, I am a Democrat while my parents are Republican. Often, we participate in quarrels over different events that occur in society.
While reading both the Tressie McMillan’s essay “The Logic of Stupid Poor People” and Scott Russell Sanders essay “The Men we Carry in our Mind”, I thought about the social identity (us-them) theory which states that we have all divided the world into an "us" and a "them"; a root for all stereotyping and prejudice present throughout society. The "us" is one's view of an in-group and the "them" are the out-group. When we split society into these two organizations, the in-group begins to discriminate against the out-group leading, inherently, to stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination. This is clearly present throughout the two essays in that McMillan was taught that she was part of “them” and in order for her and her family to be more accepted
Party polarization is the process where political factions spatially align themselves ideologically in reference to other factions. In simpler terms, it is when parties pick sides on the current issues. Most if not all of the polarization effects occur when it is paired with other trends such as partisanship and fractionalization. While polarization can manifest itself in many ways in different political systems, the party polarization in the U.S. is what will be discussed here. Although polarization usually creates negative effects, in certain situations it can be very beneficial, but in the U.S.’s case specifically polarization is becoming a burden on the democratic process.
