Like most of my colleagues, I entered medical school uncertain of a speciality choice. The idea of choosing just one practice of interest was challenging. In the midst of the uncertainty surrounding my decision I looked to the guidance of my family. I have been very fortunate to have the constancy of a loving family who provide great support, encourage personal growth, and nurture both my intellectual curiosity and affable spirit. I look back at the hardships we have taken on. I remember battles from everyday accidents such as broken fingers to the lifelong maintenance of metabolic disorders or the unexpected curveball of mental health issues, right down to the crushing emotional turmoil that comes with a terminal diagnosis. When I was young, I wanted to learn a musical instrument. My cultural upbringing had already given me a sense of rhythm and timing through traditional dance. I quickly fell in love with a particular mantra; “Music is a body, and the body cannot survive without a heartbeat.” I started at my roots and took lessons to play the tabla, a duo of drums that was played with intricate movements of the fingers. I would listen to CD’s and emulate the masters for at least an hour a day. Not only did I develop attention to detail but I also learned discipline and how to listen to others. At a rotation in primary care in Colorado I noticed that being able to address diet and lifestyle was of the utmost importance especially with the increasing rate of childhood obesity in the United States. I dealt with this personally as I struggled with my weight throughout my childhood and well into early adulthood. Today I am on a path to a healthier lifestyle and I make the choices to my health based on the information I have been trained on and taught by professors and practitioners. I look forward to sharing this knowledge of preventive medicine as an Internist one
