The information presented in the article offers a base level analysis into the complications and opportunities associated with the changing technology used in interpersonal communication. I found the concerns expressed in the article to be both relatable and accurate and drew several conclusions based on the information provided. Equally important is the ability to view these concerns as a potential opportunity for improvement. The emotional connection between an individual and their smartphone has too often become integrated as a staple for their day to day actions. Admittedly, I too feel anxious and lost without my smartphone device by my side. Therefore, I agree with the observance that the, “total ban of smartphone usage could slightly disrupt the productivity of their employee population”. It then becomes a challenge of how managers and supervisors can create the appropriate ground rules to monitor the usage of such devices. As a manager of a pool facility that solely employs students, understanding this connection and establishing an effective cellphone policy within the workplace is critical. Additionally, I use digital communication with my staff as a way to connect with them outside of the workplace, while ensuring face to face communication is still the primary source of communication for important information. I think as managers, being able to recognize when and how to take advantage of this digital connection the generation Z employees possess is crucial for achieving success. Equally important is having the ability to recognize when face to face communication must be used. Newer generations will struggle more than ever to develop these essential interpersonal skills. I believe the solutions presented in the article are only a temporary solution to this problem. With children beginning to use technology at an age younger than ever before, I think it’s inevitable that their communication skills will suffer. Because soft skills take extensive periods of time to develop, organizations and managers can only do so much to work with these new generations to improve these skills. In order to truly resolve these concerns, it must start with revamping the way the educational system works. Educators must stress the importance of these soft skills, and integrate them into the curriculum being taught. The earlier the students begin to develop these skills, the easier it will be for managers to integrate and facilitate healthy workplace relationships upon hiring them into the organization. From the other perspective, managers must continue to understand new digital communication platforms in order to remain relevant and effectively communicate to these new generations of potential employees.
