My practice is driven by and laden with the values of capacity for change and growth, the individual’s narrative, and curiosity. The belief in the capacity for change and growth motivates me to sit with difficult clients and attempt to assist them in seeing the prospect of change while maintaining a respect for their self-determination. The belief in the client’s ability to change keeps me positive and hopeful for the future of the client throughout the many transitions within the client’s life and is the embodiment of the dignity and worth of the person within my values. The value of the client’s narrative also inspires me to think of and express how policy could be created or amended to better suit the populations served. Hearing, understanding and empathizing with the narrative of the clients I serve causes the development of strong rapports and represents the importance of human relationships. The value of an individual’s narrative is closely connected to the significance I place on curiosity in relationships. I can be counted on to question why things are the way they are, what could be done to make them better and what is the best way to make those changes a reality. My practice involves believing in my clients, reflecting on the context, receiving education on what can be done, and using the client’s voice as well as leveraging my own to be involved in advocacy for the client and the populations he or she belongs to. The way I value and employ curiosity in my practice displays the importance I place on competence. These values not only translate into my practice but also into my theoretical framework as
