Contexts of communication….it can determine not only how your communication should be sent, but also how your communication is received. Below I have listed the five contexts of communication, my interpretation of their meaning, and an illustration of the context.
1. Interpersonal Communication - personal reflection or one’s own assessment of communication delivered or received. Illustration: In high school, I prepared and delivered a speech as a nominee for the position of Student Body Secretary for my school. Although my preparation of the speech was concise, my delivery faltered by stammering and replacing the word “Secretary” with “Vice President” in my execution. Group Communication - exchange of opinions, beliefs or ideas that are held between 3 to 8 people gathered for a common reason . Illustration: In an effort to increase morale and communication between departments, my work arranged for one employee from each of our 6 departments, along with one department head, to participate in a excursion that included team building exercises and joint planning efforts to complete.
4. Public Communication - an opinion, belief or idea is presented by one person before a group of people, either in a written or verbal format. Illustration: Every four years, our country orchestrates a Presidential Debate between political party nominees to share their opinions, viewpoints and suggestions on how they would run the country in the hopes of convincing viewers and listeners to vote for them in the election.
5. Mass communication - announcement presented to a large number of people either in print, email, broadcast or any other form of social media, in an effort to persuade individuals to a common agreement. Illustration: In an effort to improve health, our country routinely broadcasts announcements on TV and over the radio about the dangers of smoking and offers public assistance programs to help kick the
