In this article Diana Mutz wrote about the election campaign and how it affects the people. In her career when she has covered the campaign as a part of media it was not really a great feeling for her. She believes there is a great difference between how public views the part media plays in election then what a candidate thinks. She thinks media is not very influential to change public views over a candidate. She argued that majority of the people already knew and determined on who they going to vote way before the general election campaign started.
Most of what people know about politics and politicians comes from the media. Technology such as the internet has transformed campaigning by closing the gap between the candidates and the public. People use social media to voice opinions with each other and be involved in politics. Obtaining different viewpoints about a politician can change a person’s opinion. The older communication technologies have not vanished; they are just evolving.
The strength and effects of mass media are expressed perfectly in Denis McQuail’s article “The Influence and Effects of Mass Media.” McQuail does not really focus on the educational spectrum of mass media like Lunsford. Instead he tries to provide useful information about how mass media effects society as a whole and how there can be power gained from ownership of mass media. Instead of just thinking of mass media as a website that teenagers get on to post what they are eating for lunch or what they had to do that day, McQuail looks deeper and writes about how mass media can lead to political and economic power. One example from his article is when he writes about how mass media “can attract and direct attention to problems, solutions or people” and can also be useful in the forms of “persuasion and mobilization.”
The four rhetorical devices are used to inform, convince, instill fear, and raise awareness to the fact that people can be swayed, that elections can be swayed.
