Interpret the facts of the American Revolutionary War. America should not have won. With less money, soldiers, supplies, etc., than England’s army, logically, it appears the British were unbeatable. However, the Americans won. How? Well, they had the right amount of luck at all the right times. From the very start of the war the American soldiers were lucky. The British generals were over confident and comfortable with themselves and the skill of their army. General William Howe is a great example of this, for instance, at the Battle of Long Island the British over powered the American soldiers, and the Americans did not know how to retreat. This gave General Howe the prime opportunity to demolish the entire American army right then and there. Luckily for the American soldiers, General Howe didn’t take the chance and instead let the Americans slip off. Without this stroke of luck the American soldiers would have been demolished, and the War obliterated. The British fought wars with guidelines and rules. The Americans, did not. The battle is known as the battle of Saratoga, and the Americans, indeed, were incredibly lucky in this situation. The soldiers in Saratoga were German mercenaries, (Hessians), being paid by the British to fight for them. What does this mean? It means that the Hessians didn't have a cause for fighting, they only cared about being paid, and because of that they lacked motivation. That was the Americans first stroke of luck, their second was that Christmas is a holiday and the Hessians had chosen to celebrate with booze.
