Brendan Dassey Interrogation videos depict a young man and two police officers in a small room where eventually Dassey agrees with police that he raped and took part in the murder of Teresa Halbach. This case arose much popularity due assumptions of questionable police practices. to his perceived coerced false confession, the news publicity of the case and a Netflix show titles “Making a Murder”. Although widely publicised, I had no prior knowledge of the Dassey case and chose not to do any research on the matter until i had watched all the interrogation footage in order to get an unbiased opinion of the case. Interviews are usually open-ended question formatted used without assumption in order to gain information. Interviews are meant to be friendly and loose in structure whereas, interrogations are meant as times to put the person being interviewed at a psychological disadvantage. Interrogations have a controlled and directed format; they have an assumption of guilt and are used for suspects. Examples of interrogation techniques are the good cop bad cop, PEACE and the Reid. The Reid Technique is a nine step process which will be further examined in the later. Another important definition is youth. In the footage Dassey appears to be under the age of majority however, through the interrogation we learn he is still in high school and his mother says that he will be going to juvy which, we can reasonably agree that he is a minor. In the United States, 45 states the maximum age is 17 and five states it is 16(Cite). Although he was 17 he was sentenced as an adult (cite), but for the use of this paper he will be referred to as a young person as he was 16 at the time of interrogations and the criminal offences. The age of Dassey was not factored into the caution he
