In the epic story of Beowulf, translated by Burton Raffel. Beowulf is a character from the story. Beowulf has the strength of thirty men, and he has the ability to swim and hold his breath for long periods of time. In the story divine interventions come into play. Beowulf faces several obstacles throughout the poem. He is considered the hero in the story. The characteristics of a hero is bravery, no weakness, confidence, strong, loyal, responsible leader, never makes mistakes, respectful and a courage person.
Beowulf first obstacle he faced was Grendel. Grendel is considered to be a man-eating creature. In the poem, it states that Grendel “Snatched up thirty men, smashed them Unknowing in their beds and ran out with their beds and ran out with their bodies,” Lines 37-38. I believed that Beowulf was protected by God. During the battles that Grendel was involved in, he was protected by God to escape the grasp especially with the battle of Grendel’s mom. Grendel mother was angry to say the least and found it very disrespectful that Beowulf left Grendel arm for the public to see. So Grendel mother took the arm of Grendel and she killed several people from the Geats and the Danes. From Beowulf point of view he did not know that their was another man-eating creature beside Grendel. So he was surprised about the situation. However, he did not show any fear and faced Grendel’s underwater in her cave. That particular battle was a hard fought victory for Beowulf. In the book it states “ That she’d (Grendel's mother) brought him (Beowulf) into someone’s battle-hall, And there the water’s heat could not hurt him” Lines 486-487. That quote can be interpret that God protected Beowulf in the battle with Grendel’s mother. Normally a hero has a divine intervention during battles. Throughout the
