Introduction:

In the United States 1.5 million women experience intimate partner violence every year (Rodriguez, Heilemann, Fielder, Nevarez, & Mangione, 2008). This essay is a review of literature on the association among intimate partner violence (I.P.V) in Latina women, and the connection to depression. It is conducted to understand the factors that are related to depression & I.P.V in Latina women, and to what rate does it affect their quality of life. The study is also directed to provide functional services to those working with I.P.V. victims. The collective data is an addition to the little known about I.P.V. on Latin women.

Study can be conducted with undocumented participants from abuse shelters. These participants may be more willing to speak about their ordeals; since they are already in a program that offers support.

This article is based on the study conducted on 210 pregnant Latinas attending prenatal clinics located in Los Angeles, California (Rodriguez, Heilemann, Fielder, Nevarez, & Mangione, 2008). Weakness of the research:

One of the study’s weakness is the limited asses available to the researchers. They were only able to collect data on the moment they met with the participant in a health appointment. “The data is limited to a baseline analysis at a single moment in time, and they do not allow the researcher to establish the long-term effects of intimate partner violence on mental health,” (Rodriguez, Heilemann, Fielder, Nevarez, & Mangione, 2008).

Another limitation to this study is the trauma measure does not include all possible trauma associated with adverse mental health outcomes. Only those the participants were willing to share were recorded.
