Chris McCandless
A man who goes off the grid to find inner piece, but instead dies alone from starvation. That’s exactly who Chris McCandless is. To be fair, that is the simple version that leaves out some background information; however, it is still true nonetheless. In the book “Into the Wild,” we learn about Chris McCandless. We hear about how he ventured out into the wilderness, and about the relationships he made along the way. Although I understand why he did what he did, I still think, objectively, that he did a selfish thing.
We find out Chris dies pretty early on in the book. Only after we know that he dies, do we learn more of his backstory. He was intelligent and his family was fairly wealthy. However, his parents would often fight and his father was abusive and seceretive. Chris also had a love for nature, and thought that if he emersed himself in it he would find the meaning to life or discover more about himself.

Now I would not call Chris completely selfish. For one, he donated practically all of his leftover college fund money. Also, when people would talk about him they don’t describe as selfish, mean, or as someone who likes when other people are sad. I do believe that he did care about a lot of people, but I think him leaving all those people and having them worry could be a little selfish. Then he would constantly get food, a place to sleep, or a ride from people, but when they try to help him long term he would always refuse or leave them. The reason I would consider his actions selfish is because, he wasn’t considering how those who cared about him felt about his mission to leave
