The six influences use a mix of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Before we discuss whether the six influences’ goal is intrinsic motivation, we need to know what the differences between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation is doing a behavior or task because you enjoy the act of doing it. Extrinsic motivation is doing a behavior based off an external reward such as money a trophy or maybe well-being of yourself or others. Next, a quick overview of the six influences. First you have personal motivation, on page 30 of our reading it asks the question do they enjoy it? This question can go both ways; do they enjoy doing the incorrect behavior or do they enjoy the act of doing the correct behavior? It is up to you too try to discover which type of personal motivation is occurring in the moment. Second is personal ability. Can they do it? (Grenny, Patterson, Maxfield, McMillan, & Switzler, 2013, p. 30) on page 72 of our book the writer talks about a village that has an infestation of Guinea worms. The writer goes on to talk about whether the villagers know how to properly filter their water. It seemed as if they were not able to complete the task without continuing the infestation.
