The concept of the outcome of our decisions is a controversial topic that has many different opinions. In both poems “Invictus” by William Earnest Henley and “See it through” by Edgar Guest both authors touch on the main idea that we chose what happens in our lives and the outcome depend on us. They demonstrate this theme by showing dedication to hid their emotions, never giving up, and highlighting the fact that things may not always be good but that doesn’t mean they will stay like that. Firstly, In order to persevere through the bad times it is important to not let our emotions get the best of us. Oftenly, it is stated that showing emotions is a sign of weakness, which I believe both authors support. Edgar Guest states, “[l]ift your chin and set your shoulders,” (Guest). Providing the readers with this imagery allows them to understand that in order to hide our emotions you must essentially “keep your head up”.
