In the book, Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand, we are introduced to Louie Zamperini, an Olympic runner who is drafted into World War II. On a rescue mission, the plane he works on runs out of fuel and the engines malfunction, causing the plane to crash in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Three survive the crash, including Louie.

The story takes a dark turn when Rainsford discovers that Zaroff hunts humans for sport and he is the next target. Throughout the story, Rainsford faces adversity in the form of physical challenges, mental challenges, and moral dilemmas. These challenges ultimately shape his identity as a hunter and as a person. Rainsford faces physical challenges as he is hunted by Zaroff and his dogs.

Likewise, in Lysley Tenorio’s short story, The Brothers, he uses symbolism to explain the transgender community’s invisibility because the community has a history of powerlessness. Also, through symbolism, another Lysley Tenorio short story, Save the I-Hotel, explains the invisibility of Filipino workers in the 20th century and victims of unrequited love. Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man is a riveting novel encompassing the life and hardships of an unnamed black narrator in the 1930’s. Ellison’s beautifully crafted work dives deep into the racism and hardships of 1930 and uses numerous conventions to layer depth onto his subject. Ellison attempts to inform the reader of the extreme racism that was rampant in 1930’s society. The violence displayed in the battle royale held in the narrator's home town in chapter one is a shocking opening to the rest of the novel.
The authority structure of the Invisible People is very different from the authority structure of the American society. In the American society, people must abide by a set of rules and laws and if one does not respect those laws they will face consequences. On the contrary the Invisible People live in a society where they are not told what to do, they do not have laws that they have to follow, as implied by the chief’s statement “If I told a man to do what he does not want to, I would no longer be chief”.
In the novel, Invisible Man, the narrator is always in pursuance of justice. His consistent search is driven by his inability to be treated as an equal in this white man’s society. As he fought for justice for the “dispossessed” the Narrator was constantly faced with injustice. Although his success seemed positive in the eyes of others, it had a negative impact on his life as a whole.

In this essay from Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man, I will be discussing the notion of invisibility and where associable the related images of blindness and sight. Using two episodes from the beginning of the novel where the narrator is still perceptually blind to the idea that he is invisible. The first episode occurs just after the battle royal, where the narrator delivers his speech to the white people. The narrator’s speech episode is an integral part of the notion of invisibility, simply because the reader is introduced to different ideas of invisibility connected to the image of blindness. The second episode occurs in the Golden Day with the veteran mocking Norton’s interest in the narrator.
Throughout the book, this larger notion of invisibility is always in the background, but it is presented most prominently in the encounter between the narrator and a blonde man on the street. When the two bumped into each other, the blonde man “called [the narrator] an insulting name,” causing him to grab the man by his lapels, headbutt him many times, and pull a knife on him in efforts to make him apologize (4).
