Three main characters in this story are Irene, Herr Schulz, and Miriam. To begin, Irene is the narrator and author of this book. Irene began this story as a young Polish girl who had the dream of helping people. Then, Irene as a teenager becomes a nurse at the Red Cross which allowed her to be inducted into the war. Irene moved from city to city trying to one day return to her family. When Irene finally does her family is ripped apart and everyone but her older sister Janina and her Aunt Helen were now slaves to the Nazis. At this time, Irene is working for Herr Schulz in his restaurant and Irene cannot help but overhear the treacherous things that are happening to the Jewish people. Some mental attributions that Irene is credited to is her bravery and strength through this hard time. Irene had her home taken over by Germans, her family taken away from her, and even hid Jews when she knew the penalty was death. Another character in the book was Herr Schulz. Herr Schultz was originally a restaurant owner in Radom that served the SS men and Majors. He was very kind and generous to Irene and her sister Janina. Without him believing that Irene could work in his restaurant, Irene would have most likely died in the factory. Herr Schulz allowed Irene to keep the Jews safe in the laundry facility and without this kindness all of the Jews most likely would have been put in a concentration camp. Herr Schultz also brought a kind and warm feeling to Irene in this tough time of war. Finally, Miriam was the town doctor of Svetlana. She took Irene in when, Doctor David contacted her that Irene was in trouble. Miriam is very smart and very kind.
