Irony is the expression of one’s meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect. Symbolism is an artistic and poetic movement or style using symbolic images and indirect suggestion to express mystical ideas, emotions, and states of mind. In Desiree’s Baby, kate chopin uses irony and symbolism (which is also present in real life) throughout the story to keep the reader interested.
In the story “Desiree’s baby” irony is used in different ways. She wrote, “ night and day, i thank the good god for having so arranged our lives that our dear Armand will never know that his mother, who adores him, belongs to the race that is cursed with brand of slavery”, revealing the truth that Desiree is not black. Objects are used to symbolize the coming together of two things whether it’d be people or objects. With religious beliefs a ladder can represent the relationship between heaven and earth or ascension meaning “the act of rising to an important position or a higher level.” (symbolism in everyday life, 1)
Most girls love flowers, flowers can mean different things in personality or feeling. Roses stand for romance, violets represent shyness, and lilies stand for beauty and temptation. Symbolism, as you can see, can be found in almost anything.
People who were interviewed classmates and friends got to hear what others think of irony and symbolism.
