Is a College Degree Worth Its Cost?
Albert Einstein once said, “The value of a college education is not the learning of many facts but the training of the mind to think.” (Quote). Although historically college has been seen as the next step in education in order to work towards a successful career, the usefulness of college has come into question, especially because of the hefty price that comes with college enrollment. Even with the daunting price tag a college degree is well worth the cost, this is because a college education benefits quality of life for the educated and their community, and builds lifelong skills.
A college education is worth the cost because college experience both benefits individuals financially and society as a whole. Firstly, a college degree results in higher average wages later in life. In the last few decades the cost of a college degree has continually skyrocketed leaving potential students unsure of the necessity of a degree, sometimes opting for alternative paths of education. In Jessica Dicklers article “College Costs Are Out of Control” she cites a College Board report concluding, in the last decade tuition fees for four year private schools rose fifty-four percent and seventy-one percent at public schools. While this figure is certainly jarring it does not discredit the importance of a college education and the fact that a college degree greatly increases one's chances of employment and greater potential earnings. This pattern of an increase in wages related to the possession of a degree makes up for the cost of college itself. In addition, although the cost of tuition is rising, loans and scholarships are effective in taking some burden off the wallets of students and their parents. Overall, the result of a college education is well worth the
