Professor Otto Lidenbrock and his nephew Axel discover a manuscript in which Arne Saknussemm, a sixteenth-century explorer, claims he has found a route to the center of the Earth. Eventually, they decoded the message and set of a few days later to begin their journey to the mountain of Snafell in Iceland, where they are to begin their descent. Along the way, they run into M. Fridrikson, a fellow geologist that lives in Iceland. He tells them the route to the mountain and give them a guide named Hans who helps them throughout the journey. Making it to the center of the mountain, they find the right path which will start the descent of their journey toward the center of the Earth. I leant over an overhanging rock, and looked. My hair stood on end. An impression of void took hold of my being. I felt my centre of gravity moving through me and dizziness going to my head like a heady brew. Nothing more intoxicating than this attraction of the abyss.”(page 62) This paragraph builds conflict early in their journey from Axel’s point of view. Axel throughout the start was timid.
