Furthermore, Ariel is considered the better of the two because he is a better servant to Prospero. His abilities are far superior to Caliban and he does not cause as many problems to Prospero that Caliban does. Ariel has done wrong in the play by following the orders of Prospero to cause havoc the other characters on the island. He did not have to cheat his way to become the Duke. He also did not have to betray his own blood relative to become Duke. One wrong Prospero has done was tricking Caliban. Caliban was already on the island when Prospero and Miranda arrived. Prospero tricked Caliban into telling him how to survive on the island and then he enslaved Caliban. Caliban notes how Prospero wronged him, “Which first was mine own king; and here you sty me/ In this hard rock, whiles you do keep fro me/ The rest o’ th’ island” (1. 2. 409-411). Prospero used his dark magic to control Caliban. When Prospero was unhappy with Caliban’s work Prospero would get his spirits to torment Caliban. Caliban is considered the lesser of two pairs for a number of reasons. Caliban has a horrible work ethic, uses less sophisticated and abusive language as well as having terrible loyalty. Miranda and Ariel are conifer the superior to him but are not superior characters. Miranda too uses abusive language and is only considered better than Caliban for her better education and usually nicer temperament. Ariel is considered the better of his pairing with Caliban due to his superior skills as a spirit and better attitude. Ariel is not a superior character due to his choice of terrorizing other characters in the place of his own suffering. Prospero and Antonio is the final pair. Both characters have committed a number of wrongs to disqualify them from being considered a good character. Prospero is the superior of the two, but only because he did not betray his own flesh and blood. Prospero’s wrongs mainly include misuse of dark magic to control other characters in the Play. Antonio is considered the lesser of the two due to his wrongs. He stole the title of Duke from his brother as well as plotted the murder of two other characters. All of the characters in the pairs are terrible characters although some are slightly better than the other.
