September 14, 2014 Hamlet In the Elizabethan era, which Hamlet was written in, tragedy was customary in most plays. The intrigue in this play, keeps the audience and reader engrossed till the very end. Hamlet brought upon his own demise by his ego and his quest for the truth to be exposed. Hamlet used his intelligence to create a smoke screen till he can act in defense of his father. Hamlet starts off this conflict when his father’s apparition emerges. The ghost has caused a stir with the armed guards on watch at night. Hamlet is compelled by this spirit that looks like his father. “Look, my lord, it comes!” (Shakespeare; 1; 41 ) Hamlet’s character has been described as tragic a hero. Hamlet is trying to be honorable in his quest for the truth. Hamlet wants to find the killer within the plays plot. Hamlet decides to pretend to be mad so that people will be confused and not question his intentions. “How strange or odd soe’er I bear myself-As I, perchance, hereafter shall think meet to put an antic disposition on,” (Shakespeare; 1; 187) Hamlet warns. Hamlet does warn Horatio that he will appear mad, but I believe that even that is hard for Horatio to believe. Hamlet is undeterred in finding the truth. Hamlet killed and played mad to bring his justice to his father’s murderer. Hamlet never stopped playing mad even when others around him where being hurt. Hamlet speaks and acts rashly throughout the play. Hamlet acted mad after a few minutes of consideration, instead of taking time to truly access what would be best. I believe that he would have changed this decision if he would have taken the time to think about the best course of action. Hamlet has tragic outcomes and he causes the audience to think outside the box due to his
