No one questions Hamlet and no one gives him any consequences for his actions. Hamlet is allowed to make fools out of people, because he does not get in trouble. Hamlet makes jabs at Ophelia during the play and also makes a fool of Polonius, calling Polonius an old man. Hamlet also called Polonius a pimp because Hamlet knows that Polonius is using Ophelia as bait for him. Hamlet knows something is up with the letters Rosencrantz and Guildenstern have, and Hamlet knows that he had to act pretty fast to switch out the letters so Hamlet would not die. Earlier Hamlet tells Rosencrantz and Guildenstern that they were being used by the king and calls them sponges, “that soak up the king’s countenance” (4.2.14).
