Is Hamlet crazy? This is a very simple question with a very complicated explanation. The explanation I am going to give you, took lots of thought and effort to write and find quotes. I am here to tell you that Hamlet is very good at fooling people, and he might have fooled you. Hamlet is not mad, he has been faking it the whole time. Since Hamlet is acting mad, everyone in Elsinore thinks Hamlet is mad. Hamlet is allowed to get away with things like throwing shade at people. No one questions Hamlet and no one gives him any consequences for his actions. Hamlet is allowed to make fools out of people, because he does not get in trouble. Hamlet makes jabs at Ophelia during the play and also makes a fool of Polonius, calling Polonius an old man. Hamlet also called Polonius a pimp because Hamlet knows that Polonius is using Ophelia as bait for him. If Hamlet was mad, Hamlet would be more clueless than he is, because he always knows what is going to happen next. Another example of Hamlet knowing what is about to happen is the boat to England. Hamlet knows something is up with the letters Rosencrantz and Guildenstern have, and Hamlet knows that he had to act pretty fast to switch out the letters so Hamlet would not die. Earlier Hamlet tells Rosencrantz and Guildenstern that they were being used by the king and calls them sponges, “that soak up the king’s countenance” (4.2.14). Hamlet is brutally honest to Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, and he was also brutally honest to his mom about how bad she
