Throughout years, there are thousands of novels published each year. Especially with older novels, not all stories are able to stay relevant as the times are changing. As some novels get older, it becomes harder for them to relate the themes to the present. For some readers, this makes it hard to understand the novel and to pick up the themes portrayed in the book. Written in the 1950s, many would believe that the novel wouldn’t applicable to our society. Even though William Golding wrote this many ago, it still has been able to maintain its relevance. In my opinion, Lord of the Flies is a novel that has been able to relate to the world around us in many ways.

In Lord of the Flies the kids were stranded on the island with no adults. As we could see, the lack of authority was a serious problem for the boys. On the island, they tried to establish some rules such as whoever is holding the conch at the meetings would be the only one allowed. Some like Piggy followed that rule while others like Jack didn’t. Ralph also insisted that they needed to always keep the fire going, but there was no consequence for disobeying the rules set out by the chosen leader. I believe that if they weren’t as lenient on the rules, they could’ve achieved more of their goals and gotten more work done. I believe that this is still relevant today because people need to be held accountable for not following the rules. Again going back to the beginning with the power problem, I don’t believe that the authorities should use their power excessively or for their own benefit, but to a fair extent. With authority, people wouldn’t have gained enough of their own power to go against each
