Children are the future of our world, and we have to make sure they grow up safe, to prepare them to make a better world in their future lives. Mary Barnett’s trial in Chicago, the mother who left her six-month baby, Alison, alone for a week, while she was traveling to California without her baby, which caused the baby to die of dehydration. Before going to court, Mary Barnett went to see two psychiatrists, to study her and find out if she has mental problems that caused to leave Alison. After reading the case of Mary, I analyzed all the evidence and concluded that Mary Barnett is Innocent because she does not meet all the requirements to be a second-degree murder. The people who believe that Mary is guilty believes that she meets that three requirements to be declared as a second-degree murder because Mary was lying of her mental illness, was an alcoholic and that she was conscious of her actions. People believe that Mary was lying about having a mental illness is because some of the information that Mary was telling didn't make sense, what made people think that she was lying. Also, they believed that she was an alcoholic because Caroline Hospers said that she saw that Mary had a lot of wild parties and that all her trash can was filled with empty alcohol bottles. The most important testimony for them was from Dr. Parker because he is a psychiatrist, he said “In my opinion, she knew what she was doing and what the consequence of her actions would be. She was aware that she was leaving her child unattended and that the child would be in great danger”. The Trial of Mary Barnett, I believe Mary is innocent, but other people believe the opposite, Mary is guilty of her action. One reason they believe that is because most of the time Mary testimony did not make sense or was confused, made people think she was lying because she didn't want to go to prison. In my opinion, I believe that Mary is saying confused or not sense words, was because she was confused or still being in shock because she lost her baby, and she could not believe it. Caroline Hospers said that Mary had her trash filled with empty alcohol bottles said that she was irresponsible, but she was drinking because she was depressed. According to Dr. Bloom, he said, “[Mary] turned to alcohol to raise her spirits, but this just exacerbated her condition”. This proves that Mary was not drinking because she was being irresponsible, if not she felt that it would make her life easier and feel better, but it was worse, what caused her to lose her conscience and do things without thinking about it. Mary’s illness mixed with alcohol was a bad idea that made Mary not being conscious of leaving Alison alone to travel to San Francisco,
