From stories like Romeo and Juliet to Othello, readers have been amazed by Shakespeare’s talent. For ages, Shakespeare has been known as one of the greatest writers of all time, but does that mean that he is still relevant in today’s modern times? Much of the language is hard to understand for students and his work were written in times that have different beliefs than what we have now. While some believe that Shakespeare is still relevant, I maintain that he is not relevant in today’s modern time. To begin with, Shakespeare is irrelevant because much of the plots of his stories would be ruined by modern technology if it were set in modern times. Many claim that Shakespeare’s writings can be used as lessons even today, such as Shelina Zahra Janmohamed, who wrote an article titled, “On Love and War, Iraq Learns from Shakespeare.” In that article, Janmohamed claims, “ The story prompts the audience to reflect on how pride, regret, a lack of mutual understanding and interference from the outside are obstacles to resolving conflicts peacefully”(380). This quote says that the audience should learn from Romeo and Juliet because it can teach a lesson about how problems should be solved peacefully. In addition, Janmohamed also states, “ In 2008, he founded the Iraqi Theatre Company to ‘bring a contemporary cultural voice of unity and inclusiveness into the civic discourse in Iraq’” (380). This quote says that a director, Monadhil Daood, wanted to help solve the conflict in Iraq by performing plays. Some of the plays he uses are from Shakespeare and he hopes understand the lesson from these plays.
