Is the American dream still attainable? To Answer this question, we must remember what the “American Dream” is remembered as today. The American dream is the belief that anyone, regardless of where they were born or what class they were born into, can attain their own version of success in a society in which upward mobility is possible for everyone. It is the U.S national set of ideals including representative democracy, rights, liberty, and equality, in which freedom is interpreted as the opportunity for individual prosperity and success. Is it still attainable? Can it still be achieved? My answer for you is yes. It is possible to behold freedom. It is possible to have a roof over your head and make good money. Whites (41%) are more likely than African American (17%) or Hispanics (32%) to say they have achieved the American dream. But more African American’s (62%) and Hispanics (51%) than whites (42%) say they are on their way to achieving it. Notably, there are no significant racial or ethnic differences in the shares who say the American dream is out of reach for their families. Just 11% of the public say “being wealthy” is essential to their own view of it. By contrast, majorities say “freedom of choice in how to live” (77%), having a good family life (70%) and retiring comfortably (60%) are essential to their view of the American dream. With that being said, no one has ever granted Americans equal opportunity to achieve their dreams. Instead, it is an ideal that we, the people, can strive towards. Each of us can choose to dedicate ourselves to taking the chance to make our dreams a reality. Even if that means we must fight for it or face it never coming true. Despite all the political upheaval, we can still have hope. For as long as the U.S. has existed there have always been corruption and contradictions that held our nation back from having equal opportunity.
