Walter R. Borneman writes the book 1812: The war that forged a nation in a way that made it a unique book. Reading the book felt like you were playing a board games such as battleship; a game that involved moving pieces around a board to try and beat your opponent. In the case of this book the opponent being the British. The book has so much of a focus on naval battles and really helps show the struggle of a newly formed country.
The War Of 1812 Authors: Kathlyn gay , Martin gay Book report by: Jacob Blackburn The war of 1812 , also know as the French and Indian war , was one of the first wars that America took place in. The war of 1812 had around 245,000 men in the British army at the beginning of the war, and at the end , roughly 9,000 of those men were killed in the heat of battle. This battle has most likely one of the most famous moments in American history , and that moment would be the birth of our national anthem , the star spangled banner.
In chapter one of What They Fought For, I learned about the letters and diaries of the Confederate soldiers. The themes of the letters were home-sickness, lack of peace, and the defense of home against their invading enemy. The thought of soldiers fighting for their homes and being threatened by invaders, made them stronger when facing adversity. Many men expressed that they would rather die fighting for a cause, than dying without trying and this commitment showed patriotism. Throughout the letters, soldiers claimed their reason for fighting, was for the principles of Constitutional liberty and self-government.
By July 5th, tensions had risen within the ranks of the workers, and Fick could sense it. That morning Fick asked for 100 police deputies to come to the mill to help keep the mob under control; however, the policemen arrived at the mill to find 1,000 standing outside the gates. Needless to say, the mob did not let the deputies enter the mill. Without the help of the police, Fick had been left in a very sticky situation, so he turned to hired guns: the Pinkerton Men. These men referred to themselves as “private investigators”; however, the Pinkerton more or less acted like hired gunmen for the highest bidder, or in this case, Carnegie.

I Just saw Mr. Jonathan he came in my store and said “Have you heard we just lost Charleston, England has it under control” They were lead by Major General Benjamin Lincoln and he lost by the British Lieutenant General Sir Henry Clinton and his army of 10,000 at Charleston, South Carolina. He captured 3,000 Patriots and a lot of equipment and ammunition. During the siege England only lost 250 men. I replied with “What if the use those men and come north and kill us all” Jonathan said “ I don’t know what we will do we must get prepared we can’t loose with all the work we have put into this war we have risked every thing”.
Adelbert Ames, Letter from the Republican Governor of Mississippi (1875) Adelbert Ames, an Idealist, Union war hero, and Medal of Honor recipient stayed in the South after the Civil War to aid in the region’s Reconstruction. Ames discovered white resistance to Republican rule, first as a senator, then as the governor of Mississippi. On September 5, 1875, Ames wrote a terrifying letter to his wife Blanche to express despair over what was going on. His letter tells a story of fifteen colored men, women, and children. He recounts how while the group was barbecuing in Clinton, white men fired into the crowd killing two women and two children.
Jay Winter’s book, Remembering War: The Great War Between Memory and History in the Twentieth Century, analyzes the ‘memory boom’, a phenomenon that occurred in consequence of the Great War. It was an, “act of defiance, an attempt to keep alive at least the names and the images of the millions whose lives have been truncated or disfigured by war.” (p.12) It was a movement to commemorate all those lost or affected by World War I, in the matter of literature, memorials, photographs, etc. Winter’s primary argument is that the memory boom was constructed by Europeans in need to remember and pay tribute to the victims of war since 1914 and the consequences the war caused.
In Ray Bradbury’s novel “Something Wicked This Way Comes,” we follow the story through the eyes of a young boy named Will Halloway. However, Will Halloway is not the character who goes through a major journey like most main characters. Instead, his father, Charles Halloway is the one who goes through the most change. This change can be seen by the immense character flaws he exhibits at the beginning of the novel, the conflicts he goes through, and how those conflicts change him for the better in the end.
Beginning early in life, people establish different values and beliefs through personal experience, leading them to commit to preserving certain ethics and ideals. These commitments serve as the cornerstone of one’s identity and heavily influence the life decisions one makes. In Timothy Findley’s The Wars, the protagonist, Robert Ross has a clear commitment to preserving the purity of life and innocence. Thrown into the hectic environment of World War 1, Robert struggles against all odds to preserve the integrity of his own humanity.
A revolution is a time of change, specifically in the American Revolution a time when the American Colonies overthrew the British Government becoming their own nation. Revolution a complete turn derives from the word revolve. Things usually revolve so that they can be aligned again and balanced. The colonies revolved so that they could completely change from the British control, wanting to create their own government independent of the British. The American Revolution, to some historians “wasn’t really revolutionary” including the need for a nationality and freedom for all.
On February 18, 2016, my daughter and I saw National Mythstory (Abstract) by Bryan Anthony Moore in the upstairs gallery of the BSU Student Union Building. Moore is expressing his distain towards Texas and the fallacies within their textbooks, specifically the 2014 edition. His mixed medium use of ceramic sculptures, various graphite work on a selection of paper such as tea stained and burned and aged, and an oil painting made the exhibit very interesting and unique for me. He even used something called ‘bullshit ink’, an ink concoction created from bull feces to represent “the bullshit passing for History in Texas public schools”. (citation)
1. Introduction In 2010, the Deepwater Horizon oil platform spit nearly five million barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico, making it the largest oil spill in history. The 1989 oil spill surpassed Exxon Valdez's oil spill in 1989 as the largest oil spill ever seen in US-controlled waters and the Ixtoc I oil spill of 1979 as the largest oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. On April 20, 2010, Deepwater Horizon, an ultra-deepwater offshore rig, exploded in the Gulf of Mexico about 41 miles off the coast of Louisiana, killing 11 riggers and injuring 17 others.
The original text is Journey to the West written by Cheng’en Wu in the Ming dynasty. The Journey to the West is one of the Four Classics, it created a romantic world mixed with the reality, describing the stories of the Monkey king’s uproar in the Heaven, and the Tang Monk journey to the West for begging Buddhist sutra to bring it back to China for eliminating pain of the publics. It will be a TV show, and the main clew of the story is about an anti-corruption 5-members group organized by the Chinese Communist Party’s Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCPCCDI), targets to tour for anti-corruption movement. It will be partial faithful to the original text, similar with its linear narrative structure and characteristics but will absolutely reverse all sequences to flashback to show the possible ideas that implied within the original text, and the details well be demonstrated in the following paragraphs.
