The Mirabal sisters, also known as La Mariposas, have been known throughout the Dominican Republic for participating in a major revolution against their unjust ruler, Rafael Trujillo. After years of the sisters’ hard-work, along with the others who were involved in the revolution, their work paid off when Trujillo's regime ended with his assassination. However, in order for them to have taken part in this act against Trujillo, the Mirabal sisters had to sacrifice several things from their lives, most importantly, their freedom and their relationship with their family. Many people believe that these sacrifices were not necessary because the sisters didn’t need to go to the extent where the end result would be them orphaning their children. Nonetheless,
Billie Jo struggle with a lot of things but her biggest struggle is getting away from the dust. Billie Jo friend Livie Killian is leaving Oklahoma and going to California. Billie Jo says, “And I’m wondering what kind of friend I am, wanting my feet on that road to another place, instead of Livie’s” (9). Billie Jo is feeling guilty because she wishes it was her leaving instead of Livie. Billie Jo, runs away and gets on a train to leave the dust of Oklahoma behind.
“The Scarlet Ibis,” written by James Hurst, is a bittersweet story. A weak autistic child is born into a family of cotton farmers. They name the child Doodle, which was given by his older brother. His brother was often cruel, but he pushed Doodle to work to fit in. They fail in their efforts at the end of summer.
Mary Mebane recalls as freshmen was stopped by the chairman’s wife because of how well Mary scored on her verbal examination compared to the white people at her school. She knows that the chairman 's wife thought it was a fluke and she speaks to her, but Mebane knows that this is out of an act of racism. Mebane then shows African people how their people are just viewed as numbers. She also shows the stereotype how light skin students were smarter people than darker students but what was even worse to the eyes of the school is that she is a dark- skinned woman. She continues to target African women with the example of her friend Lucy which was a, “Dark Dark skinned” girl that chose to hang around a light skin girl named Patricia.
In life, people find different ways to cope with their issues. This is the case in “Vaclav and Lena” by Hayley Tanner, where the main characters Vaclav and Lena face many obstacles, but use their imaginations to help them deal with the struggles they face in reality. This relates to the quote “Imagination is the one weapon in the in the war against reality” by Jules de Gautier, because Vaclav and Lena use their imaginations and dreams of better things to come, to ignore the problems they currently face. Vaclav and Lena use their imaginations and dreams of the future to forget about their issues momentarily, and to be able to postpone dealing with them.
In Bucknell University’s production of Marisol by Jose Rivera, one of the central themes is chaos and the effects of chaos. This theme of chaos is in part seen through the inconsistent timeline of the play. Chaos is also seen through the development of the main characters Marisol, June, and Lenny. Jose Rivera’s purpose in writing about chaos is to parallel the real life experiences of so many people before and even now that live the lives of his characters in Marisol. The chaos is present to give voice to the real people who lived in uncertainty, enduring the insane events of the play.
In the story, “The Scarlet Ibis”, the author, James Hurst, used a scarlet ibis to symbolize Doodle. The scarlet ibis in the story was an injured bird that was weak just like Doodle. Throughout the story Doodle shows that he is also gullible and a big dreamer along with being weak. Doodle from “The Scarlet Ibis” is gullible, weak, and a big dreamer.
First, in “ Aria” By Richard Rodriguez the reader can see that throughout the story he never goes outside to talk to any of his neighbors, nor does he say he ever plans to. Richard believes that due to him not being white or as he calls it a “Gringo”, then he will never be able to spend some recreational time with them. Furthermore, we also see that Richard is one of the few fortunate ones that got to live around this area instead of the mexican side of town this implies that since he and his family do not belong there, therefore they would not be accepted by his neighborhood. His family is even shown to understand this when Richard states “My mother and father were more annoyed than intimidated by those two or three neighbors who initially
Cathy Ames has been criticized because she is completely evil. It has expressed throughout the novel that Cathy is inhuman. She has no emotion, no feelings, and no good in her. Many state that she is a symbol for Satan or a witch, who is pawn of Satan. People go so far in declaring that she is one of these evil spirits because even from birth she was filled with extreme evil and darkness, lacking characteristic that make up a human.
In the book “Two Kinds” by Amy Tan, it’s about a little girl who is pressured by her mother to become something she doesn’t want to be. Jing- mei , the daughter, is forced to become a prodigy(child actress), by her mother, and she doesn’t want to be one. In the story, Jing- meis’ mother uses allusions such as Shirley Temple to push her into becoming a prodigy. Although at first Jing- mei is excited to become a prodigy, she later realizes its something she just doesn’t enjoy doing. Consequently, the uses of allusion in the story help Jing- mei discover to not be a prodigy and that what her mother wants for her is not always important.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer, a show made by Joss Whedon, is a great show to watch when it comes to sociology. Besides the fact that the hero is a girl, there are many other sociological concepts within the show. The character in Buffy the Vampire Slayer all shows deviance at one point or another, there are very strong gender roles, the show includes various sex topics, and shows a tad bit of economics and social class. Buffy Summers is a Vampire Slayer, which means it is her job to kill vampires and other types of demons.
Gabriella Montez’s primary stereotype is the “nerd.” The first time Gabriella is seen, she is reading a book. This is a common indication used throughout the film industry that leads viewers to make the assumption that the character in question is introverted and intelligent. When Gabriella transfers to a new school, it is made clear that she is in fact academically talented. She is referred to as a “freaky genius girl” and “an Einsteinette.”
The Mirabal sisters were revolutionaries who opposed the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo. During the revolution, they were given the code name “Las Mariposas”, or “the butterflies”. The term “mariposa” suits each sister in a different way. Patria, Dedé, Minerva, and Mate Mirabal each have their one reason to be compared to a butterfly. The nickname “mariposa” shows who the Mirabal sisters are; they transformed from domestic, innocent mothers and wives into brave, defiant martyrs for national freedom.
When we think of Old Hollywood musicals, what comes to mind? One of the best musical classics is the 1952 Singin’ in the Rain movie which showcase characters in a transitional environment. Now, La La Land brings us two main characters, Mia and Sebastian, on the verge of a drastic transition. Both characters go through a transformation that at the end brings them a bittersweet joy to their lives. We will examine the writer’s decisions for the dialogue used while taking note of specific leading scenes.
The goal of this activity was to compare and contrast two main characters of Frankenstein whom are Victor Frankenstein and Elizabeth Lavenza. Some of their similarities is their thirst for knowledge, and they are both very caring. Their differences include, how they approach and deal with problems, and their personalities (explained later). Both are very similar and barley have any differences but, the ones that they do have are very distinctable. Starting with similarities, Elizabeth and Victor share many such as their thirst for knowledge.
