Men live by what they get and what they have. At some point, they have to give up and see that the end is coming close, and for Ish that point has come and he realizes that civilization will be ending soon and there is no point in trying to continue it. Even if this civilization will end, Earth will overcome anything it faces, and it will continue to go on, withstanding all that comes across. Ish now only has dismissive memories, and he has come to the point where he is not in control of what he does, rather Earth has taken over and even without him there, it will continue to abide. Since the end has come, Ish decides to recall all that has went on since the start on his civilization, comparing himself to the earth and the hill, “‘But, no’ he thought, after a moment, “I must die as i have lived- by the light of my own mind, by what light it gives me… I know that the hills themselves, though men call them eternal- are too changing always.
Family: You Never Know What You Have Until it is Gone Throughout the memoir “A Long Way Gone”, Ishmael told how he lost his family in war, through this experience he realized that his family is crucial to his happiness and well being, he also learned that he could form other family bonds with different people. “I wanted to see my family, even if it meant dying with them” (Beah 109). The definition of a family is not limited to blood relation, other loved ones can be family as well.
As mentioned before in chapter 1 his interest in the appearance of moon. For the past couple of years Ishmael has been trained how to be a soldier, he has learned many thing like learning how to survive, fight, and kill. After learning all of this he has been able to break through his self conscious with the help of Esther and Leslie. Ishmael has regained his past common knowledge of his family history. He remembers his conversation between his grandmother and him about an important lesson she gave him, about how the spiritual world and real world connect.
Ishmael has accept the fact that the war has ruined his enjoyment of meeting new people. Because of him going into villages and being chased out because they believed he was a rebel, Or having to go through other villages because he knew nobody there and he knew what was coming to their village and he did not want to stay had ruined the experience for him until later on in his life. Ishmael's experiences force him to deny his emotional side in order to survive. His flight from RUF attacks on the various villages in Sierra Leone requires him to let go of attachments to family and friends. Although he holds out hope to see his family, he has no choice but to close off himself to the world.
Later on in the book Ishmael is forced into the military; he sees and does thing a child should never experience in their entire life. The ending of the book is both

As Ishmael Beah becomes accustomed to the cruel life during war in Sierra Leone, Ishmael learns that ensuring trust within the companions he meets on the battlefield keeps him “human” throughout the duration of the war against the rebels, as is displayed in A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah. After Ishmael and his brother, Junior escape from a village Junior whispers quietly, “I do not think that this madness will last ... he looked at me as if to assure me that we would soon go home” (Beah 15).
It is quiet understanding, mutual confidence, sharing and forgiving. It is loyalty through good and bad times. It settles for less than perfection and makes allowances for human weaknesses.” This quotation means that friendship is can be good, and bad. Understanding one another through good, and bad, but allowing the other to get hurt causes greater problems.

A Long Way Gone: War and Rehabilitation Following the life of Ishmael Beah in his autobiography, A Long Way Gone, readers experience how a young boy adjusted to drastic changes in lifestyles. The first- and perhaps more marked- change in lifestyle was when he became a child soldier in the Sierra Leone Army. The second was when he was taken away to be rehabilitated by UNICEF. Although there are several important components in both Ishmael’s life at war and his life during rehabilitation, it is his relationship with fear, how he deals with trauma, and his character in general which significantly share resemblances in each of the two mentioned lifestyles.
Once Ishmael is in the rehabilitation center he opens up to Ester. “I feel as if there is nothing left for me to be alive for. I have no family, it is just me. No one will be able to tell me stories about my childhood” (Beah, 167). Family was important to Ishmael and the war tore it apart from

After Ishmael decided to become a “simple sailor,” he then felt the need to explain his reasoning; however, if Ishmael was truly a simple sailor he would not feel the need to explain his work because it would simply be what he had to do. As chapter one progresses readers begin to further realize how gifted Ishmael truly is. Ishmael makes several references in chapter one as to how people of ancient civilizations respected the sea; Ishmael also refers to the Bible in chapter one. Ishmael is so passionate about the sea that he demands to know, “Why did the old Persians hold the sea holy?” and, “Why did the Greeks give it a separate deity” (Melville).
Since the beginning of the Earth, humans have slowly shown Earth how they can adapt to the surroundings that change ever so slightly. Change is an occurring theme that forces humans with decisions that affect the rest of their lives. It alters our thinking, understanding, and morals. Unlike other organisms, feelings are also a major impact that drives humans to form extensive choices. This alone causes some humans feel as if it is the biggest compelling reason to change based on how they feel about something or someone.
