Islam is the world’s third largest religion that has about 1.3 billion members. The growth of Islam in America is rapidly growing from individuals migrating to the states and from people converting to the faith, (Sarjjakool, 2010, pg 96). Since the 1990s, In influx of Muslims to the states has to be met with apprehension from Americans. For instance in Lewiston, Maine where Mayor Raymond urged the Muslim population to assimilate to the American culture and to stop relocating to the area. Afterwards, Mayor Raymond 's statement was met with backlash as it drew national attention. The Muslim population of Lewiston stated that the mayor 's comments elevated tensions within the community and did not help the rumours circulating that Muslims were receiving more government assistance, stealing housing from locals, and taking jobs from the residences of Lewiston, (WOSU, Muslims In Maine, 2002). Somalis are known for entrepreneurial skills, in starting a business out of nothing, and they value education very highly.
