As most New Yorkers know, Giuliani was very active during the 9/11 attacks as well as after. According to the New York Times, “He ran for his life as the towering twin symbols of his frequent boast -- the Capital of the World -- collapsed, leaving a new and heartbreaking skyline visible from the windows of City Hall. Then he saw the return of fear.” (NYT, 2001) He was so-called “more than a mayor”, during the aftermath by attending the funerals of those who passed, comfort those who survived, he showed a compassion for the people of New York, and he was seen almost like a hero.
When it comes to the “knockout game” many people are unaware of what it is. “Knockout game” is assaults which may involve one or more person trying to knock a bystander or a walking civilian unconsciously with one punch. The reason behind this game is to satisfy their amusements or to impress their accomplices by posting it on the internet for celebration. According to Thomas Sowell’s article, “Coming Soon to a City near You: The Knockout Game”, New York authorities have described these attacks as a form of “hate crimes”. These attacks caught New York City by surprise because of how mainstream media suppressed the news about the game.
This weekend I am engaged in extensive sessions with members of my National Security Council, as we plan a comprehensive assault on terrorism” Whitehouse.gov (2001) Here, the Former President has associated the attackers with “terrorism” and has explained that the National Security Team is planning a comprehensive assault on terrorism. Again, security is the primary issue, and it is the first topic of the speech. Further into the speech, in his words, “In Washington D.C. the political parties and both houses of Congress have shown a terrorist attack designed to tear us apart has instead bound us together as a nation”
However, President Bush sought to recognize the severity of the situation the nation was currently in. He used destructive diction to describe the effect of the events that had transpired. On September 11, 2001, at around nine in the morning, a plane struck the World Trade Center, in which “thousand of lives were suddenly ended by evil, despicable acts of terror”. On this morning, before the attack, nation’s people carried out their morning rituals as usual as they prepare for what they thought was just another day. The day went on with onlookers helplessly watch as the “deliberate and deadly terrorist acts” unfolded.
In the case of Debbie Almontaser, the New York Post created articles that inferred that she was a terrorist or preparing to teach Islamic law to the children at the Khalil Gibran International Academy. As previously stated in the article, there was a piece written about Almontaser when she resigned called “Jihad’Ya Later.” While the New York Post never made direct claims that Almontaser was a terrorist or supporter of violence, it did infer that she was at least a sympathizer of it. When Bennett wrote, “the pro-violence shirt is being defended by principal Debbie Almontaser,” he hinted that she agreed with terrorism (Bennett). Almontaser strictly reported that she did not agree with any sort of conflict in New York City and that her words were contrived out of context (Shouting
Ted Cruz at RJC Forum: “Our Enemies Are at War With Us” Beginning his remarks with a moment of silence for the 14 people murdered Wednesday in a mass shooting in San Bernardino, California, Senator Ted Cruz said he worries that last night attack is the markings of radical Islamic terrorism. “All of us are deeply concerned that this is yet another manifestation of terrorism, radical Islamic terrorism here at home” GOP presidential candidate said at a cattle call meeting at the Republican Jewish Coalition in Washington, D.C. Cruz was the first out of all fourteen candidates for president to speak at Thursday RJC forum where he blasted President Obama for refusing to acknowledge radical Islamic terrorism. “When the President says the Islamic State isn’t Islamic, that is just nutty,” Cruz said.
Governor Cuomo states that this violent incident will not let Americans live in fear. As a result, the bombing is making the presidential candidates to demonstrate their qualities of leadership. The bomb attack is a reason why many view the United States an unsafe place. Terrorism has always been one of the biggest problems the
American Security Post 9/11 After going through the immeasurable shock and horror of the 9/11 attacks, Americans have joined together to create a more secure nation than existed previously. “Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of America. These acts shattered steel, but they cannot dent the steel of American resolve”, these inspiring words from President George W. Bush after the 2001 terrorist attacks (Bush “Address”). Immediately following these attacks the American government was working towards creating a more secure nation. After the terrorist attack on September 11th, the United States responded by creating the Department of Homeland Security.
President George W. Bush gave a speech titled “9/11 Address to the Nation,” where he reassures the nation of our country’s strength and even calls it the “brightest beacon for freedom.” This event was a suicide bombing of the World Trade Center where approximately 3,000 people were killed and nearly 6,000 more were injured. Although it was one of the worst attacks in American history, it unified the nation in more ways than one. This speech was made even more important after a tragedy like 9/11 because the nation had been frightened by these acts of terror and was in need of the inspiration of our most powerful leader: the commander-in-chief. Throughout this speech, Bush uses rhetorical devices such as pathos, analogy, epithet, and asyndeton
1. For the purposes of the present publication, a functional approach has been adopted regarding the classification of the means by which the Internet is often utilized to promote and support acts of terrorism. This approach has resulted in the identification of six sometimes overlapping categories: propaganda (including recruitment, radicalization and incitement to terrorism); financing; training; planning (including through secret communication and open-source information); execution; and cyberattacks. a. One of the primary uses of the Internet by terrorists is for the dissemination of propaganda. Propaganda generally takes the form of multimedia communications providing ideological or practical instruction, explanations, justifications
Facebook posts, candlelight vigils, days of mourning, and for Ariana Grande to cancel her tour. Terrorists want reactions, and that is exactly what people give them after every type of terrorist attack. There is nothing wrong with the Facebook posts, candlelight vigils, and dedications. The problem is that is all that is done. The United States government needs to start taking extreme measures to keep citizens safe by monitoring suspected terrorists, and the government needs to start requiring extreme security scans before letting one into any public event.
Over the years, Israelis have had to defend themselves from foreign armies, suicide bombers and missiles. Over recent weeks, they’ve been facing a new threat: young Palestinians wielding butcher knives. Attacks have been occurring almost daily since the beginning of the month. Also last week, Palestinian youths set fire to Joseph’s Tomb in the West Bank. It has also been rumored that the Israelis plan to destroy the al Aqsa mosque, Islam’s third holiest site, which was built atop the more ancient Temple Mount, Judaism’s most sacred ground.
Conservative bigots, extremist, and the American media, targets Muslims as terroist, but are not hesistant to manipulate Black, White, Asian, or Hispanic crime as acts of terrorism. Goal Auzeen Saedi, a contributor to the Millienial Media Blog, mentions that after the 9/11 attacks, “… the FBI [Federal Bureau of Investigation] reported a 1600% increase in hate crimes against [Muslims].” Needless to say, these crimes were not reported by the media as acts of terroism as well, but were only considered by the American public as hate crimes. Furthermore, during the 2012 mass movie theatre shooting in Aurora, Colorado, James Holmes, the White male who killed 12 innocent Americans while injuring 70, received news headlines categorizing Holmes and his actions from sources such as Fox News, and CNN as mass murder, gunman, psycho killer, happy boy, and his actions: massacre. Even though these descriptions are malicious, they do not provoke the same fear to Americans as descriptions such as terroism, terroist, and Muslim—all of these terms are terrifying to the American
“Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of America. These acts shatter steel, but they cannot dent the steel of American resolve.” George W. Bush delivered this speech on the night of the September 11 attacks. The shattered steel of the Twin Towers, once towering the New York City skyline, forever changed America and its response to terrorism. The largest foreign attack on U.S. soil appropriately gave reason to Americans to recoil in fear and lose trust in the future, but in reality, the country displayed the opposite reaction.
Living in New York City for my entire life, I felt personally connected to this speech. Former Mayor of NYC, Michael Bloomberg, in the eyes of many, was not the most sympathetic person during his many years in office. This is why his speech supporting the proposed mosque near ground zero, recalling the first responders who lost their lives in the September 11, 2001, attacks, shocked so many people. Bloomberg gave his speech on Governors Island, one of the first places early settlers stepped foot in New Amsterdam, reminding the audience of past struggles for religious tolerance. He started his speech off this way to awaken the dormant moral compasses of all those who oppose the building of the mosque, “…we come here to state as strongly as ever—this is the freest City in the world.
