Many examples of the negative aspects of isolation can be found in many different pieces of literature. In the film, “Finding Forrester,” the director Gus Van Sant utilizes the development of the character William Forrester to suggest the idea that isolation of an individual can lead to a life of fear and regret. With many different characters we see the themes of isolation and what causes it, as well as what are the results of isolation and its effects on people who experience it. Isolation in “Frankenstein” is a result of someone being ostracized or outcasted from society as a result of being different or against the norm.
The former president of Indonesia, Sukarno, once said, “The worst cruelty that can be inflicted on a human being is isolation.” Humans are social creatures, who need social interaction in their lives; being forced into isolation is known to cause low self esteem and loneliness. Isolation, according to Sukarno, is the worst possible cruelty for a human being. In Frankenstein, isolation is a recurring theme in multiple characters throughout the novel. Mary Shelley, the author of Frankenstein, suggests that isolation leads to dangerous behavior.

In the novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelly, many themes motifs and symbols appear throughout the duration of the novel including themes of isolation,rejection revenge and dark romanticism, motifs such as letters, abortion, and retrospection and symbols of the moon, light and fire and god. It is clear that alienation and isolation affects the way that characters behave and the choices that they make throughout each of the respective narratives of Ambrosio from The Monk by Matthew Lewis and Victor Frankenstein from Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. Ambrosio and Frankenstein are the ones to blame for their choice of alienation and isolation which has caused Ambrosio to commit crimes of murder, rape and witchcraft and Frankenstein to utilise dangerous knowledge to create a destructive creature.
