The Deadly Truth of Isolation Being isolated in this heavily populated world is a horrific thing. It is even more terrifying when it is not by choice. Being rejected and excluded from interaction with other humans can tamper with someone’s mind. Isolation can be catastrophic not only to the person who is isolated, but also to those that are around the isolated. In 1916, Lord Alfred Tennyson brought the effects of isolation to light through his poem “The Lady of Shalott.” In “Inside the Mind of School Shooters” Peter Langman brings forth how these catastrophic school shooting start by the shooter being isolated. Isolation to some is just a word, but for others it becomes the reason for reckless behavior. Isolation pushes people to the edge, making them do things hey normally wouldn’t. In Lord Alfred Tennyson’s “The Lady of Shalott,” it says, “Or when the moon was overhead, came two young lovers lately wed: ‘I am half sick of shadows’ said The Lady of Shalott”(69-72). She means she got tired of seeing shadows and not the real thing. She could hear the two lovers and it only fueled her anger of being alone. The Lady of Shalott was starting to long for human interaction. In “Inside the Mind of School Shooters,” Peter Langman, a psychology major on kids who commit rampage school shootings, says, “Going back to your question about slow build or do they snap, people may be evolving into schizophrenia over a period of years. There often is a series of events shortly before the attack that pushes them over.” What he is saying is that being isolated just slowly eats at a person. Then something stressful or emotionally damaging can happen that pushes them over the edge. They just can not take anymore and snap, and the results of the snap can be
