Renaissance means “rebirth.” Jacob Burkhardt created the concept of it in his book The Civilization of the Renaissance in Italy. He portrayed Italy as the birthplace of the modern world in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Renaissance Italy was an urban society. By the mid-fourteenth century, it was mostly a land of independent cities that dominated the country districts around them.
