The Renaissance One of the main ideas that characterized Renaissance art and literature was one which was interest and appreciation for the classical period. The classical period was a time of Ancient Greece and Rome. It was the pinnacle of human achievement. Man’s view of the world changed greatly in a blink of an eye during the Renaissance, and for good reasons. The Middle Ages (which stretched from about 500 CE to 1350 CE), were a time of little schools, widespread illiteracy, and the Catholic Church ruling everything in Europe, meaning almost everyone had to look up to them to explain the world. During this time period, many of the population were peasant farmers named serfs under the rule of a lord who they worked for. However, At the backend of this period, the world started to change. Improved farming methods meant serfs depended less on their lords, meaning they could gain freedom and migrate to different towns to do different jobs such as being a banker or merchant.
The first reason the Dark Ages were not as dark as the name claims for them to be, is because during the Dark Ages there were tons of advances in education. The information in Doc A that claims “Europe suffered a decline in commerce and manufacturing, in education, in literature and the arts and in almost all that makes possible a high civilization.” is completely biased. And that the Dark Ages “Did not support learning” (Background Information) which is completely untrue. During the Dark Ages, there were still people learning and teaching. One of them being a monk named Richer, who “went to the town of Chartres, in what is today France, to study.”

The Renaissance era was the end of the Middle Ages and was the beginning of the contemporary period. It was a time where cultural movements flourished and the intellectual basis—humanism—arose. Humanism was a movement that believed that the human mind had limitless potential. It gave humans more freedom rather than following dogmas and superstitions. It was the start of the more scientific and logical age, based on evidence rather than beliefs and religion.
The Middle Ages was a dark time period. It was dark because education and culture were beginning to decline drastically. This is evident in document #1. As it states,”Europe suffered a decline in commerce and manufacturing, in education, in literature and the arts, and in almost all that makes possible a high civilization”. This detail demonstrates that the decline in education caused the civilizations to not reach their best potential and education began to become really rare to find as it was only accessible/available in Churches.
The year, was 1350. Things in Florence Italy began to change. People began to become more and more self-sufficient, and started to become educated. The population was made up of about 85% serfs. But, some of the freed srefs began to migrate and pick up activities such as trade.
