J. M Thorburn's Article 'Art And The Unconsicous'

173 Words1 Pages
J. M. Thorburn in her article “ART AND THE UNCONSCIOUS” claims that art is more than an aesthetic or a psychological experience but an actual reality. The article is dense with scholarly ideas and vocabulary, which prompted me to reread the piece many times in order to understand it. However, the author actually provides the reader with an outline for her argument. First she presents the paradox of two seemingly contrasting theories of art, but then, with hyperbole, she explains how they differ and then connect them. Then, she develops her concept of the balance between them. The author begins her explanation by providing a historical aspect of art through the lense of religion. She supports her ideas with other experts in the field of art.
