“It is easy to criticize [London], of course, because his faults are large and obvious, but it is much more profitable to get on the inside of him and sympathize with his outlook on life” (Labor xi). Jack London was a very interesting writer with numerous misleading explanations. He went on countless voyages and adventures during his lifetime which greatly affected his writings. Therefore, most of his books were influenced by his various voyages and adventures which makes him exceptionally special to many people who have read his books. Although, this all ended on one day when Jack was getting bullied by the leader of his school’s gang, Mike Panella. Mike went up to Jack one day and asked why he did not play with the other kids, but Jack continued to read his books. However, Mike became angry at him and ran over to throw Jack’s book across the school’s playground. Jack went up to Mike and gave him a bloody nose, which resulted in them getting in trouble. Nevertheless, Jack did not receive any punishment because he did not start the fight, but Mike, however, was whipped. To illustrate this, Jack’s close childhood friend recalled, “As the heavy ruler came down on [Mike’s] hand, his screams could be heard far down the long corridor” (Labor 24). As a result of Jack’s bravery, he became the school’s hero and no one ever reffered to him as a nerd. This made Jack realize that he should not be an antisocial, but he should talk to people to gain more knowledge. If this incident had never happened, Jack may have never went on all of his voyages which is what inspired to write his books. After a few years, Jack had to slow down his reading because he had to support his family by working at a cannery. He worked sixteen hour shifts, so barely had any time continue his love for reading. He started to think his dreams of becoming a writer was over, and he was just going to have to work at the cannery for the rest of his life to support his family. He could not keep any money for himself due to his mother needing all the money she could get.
