Ralph represents civilization and order, while Jack symbolizes the opposite, savagery and anarchy. This is shown throughout the movie where Ralph always wanted to have fixed rules and jobs for everyone, while on the other hand Jack ruled by force and had only one unspoken rule: that whatever he said was law. They were both appealing as leaders for a variety of reasons, such as their confidence, authoritative disposition, and their seniority. Ralph was appealing because he solved problems, like starting a fire, and when they first reached the island, he was the one who brought them all together with the conch. Jack was appealing because as time went on, Ralph slowly had more difficulty keeping order, causing the boys to lose faith in him as a
The Case of Jack Merridew The murders of Piggy and Simon have not gone unnoticed, and the kids from the island are all under question for their untimely deaths. The main suspect for their murders is Jack Merridew, one of the older boys on the island. The story originates in a book called The Lord of the Flies written by William Golding, about young boys who are stranded on the island. Jack is one of the older, more savage of the bunch, but he seems to be ill in the brain.
Right before the naval officer had come, the boys had become complete savages. Jack had set the entire island on fire, and he had sent all of the boys to find and kill Ralph. But when the officer came, they became innocent little boys again. When Ralph said that he was in charge, Jack “started forward, then changed his mind and stood still” (201). Jack first wanted to act savagely, but just the presence of a grown up made him think otherwise.
Not only that but he also offers protection. While that is true Jack has one main problem, tunnel vision, he becomes obsessed with killing. Golding writes “The mask was a thing on its own, behind which Jack hid, liberated from shame and self-consciousness. ”(Golding 48)
In the novel Lord of the Flies, it is obvious that the character Jack is the savage compared to all the other boys on the island. Jack is the cause of all the arguments and death that will later occur on the island. Many of the boys on the island are scared of Jack when he acts cruel and selfish. This makes them join his group, so they don't have to worry about getting hurt. During a group meeting Jack says “We shall take fire from the others,” (Golding 161).
When Jack puts on the mask, it gives him the boldness and eagerness to act as a new person. This allows him to make unethical choices further along in the book, becoming a threat to his peers. Shortly after the ship had past the island, the hunters return to find Ralph overwhelmed with anger. Jack and Ralph convey, “‘you let the fire go out… I
However, in the book, you start to realize that Jack is selfish, he doesn’t care to listen to what other people have to say, and he also wants everyone to join his tribe. Jack’s mind is always filled with the idea of hunting, while Ralph is mostly focused on finding ways to elude the island, and keeping people safe. This is shown when Ralph says, “There’s another thing. We can help them to find us. If a ship comes near the island they may not notice us.
In William Golding's novel, Lord of the Flies, Jack represents the savagery and viciousness within every human. Throughout the novel Jack becomes more and more vicious towards the boys, and it all started with hunting. When Jack couldn’t kill his first pig he became obsessed with hunting wich drove him a bit mad, causing him to become more vicious. Vicious is defined as deliberately cruel or violent. Jack can’t control his emotions and when he’s angry, he becomes quite vicious towards the other boys.
These events show that Jack’s strive for power changes him for the worse. Since the beginning of the novel, Jack has always been jealous of how Ralph was chosen as chief and not him. Jack’s jealousy over Ralph could be seen when he assures Ralph saying “Where’s the man with the trumpet……examined Ralph with interest. ”(Golding 20).
In the novel “Lord of the Flies” by William Golding the ultimate one responsible for the destruction of the island is Jack. In the novel Golding has wrote about how a group of british boys crashed on a plane and landed on a island where there are no adults, just little british boys stranded on a island .In the beginning one of the boys Ralph was the responsible leader where he knew what to do an how to manage. But of course there was this one cureles jealous boy that wanted to be a leader, the one in charge. Because of how ruthless and savage Jack was he took the fear that the boys had within them and used it against them to make them join his tribe which started the destruction of the island.
He also tries to trap him by setting the island on fire, but Ralph is saved by a naval office. In the book, Jack represents evil and darkness. He is moderately responsible for the downfall of the group, but the fact
Jack and his new clan are shown to be more violent and malicious then when Ralph was in charge. His clan, including him, disguised their identities in face paint, and it seems as if when they put it on, they became a new person free of consequence. While Ralph is hiding from the rest of the boys on the island, “He had even glimpsed one of them, striped brown, black, and red, and had judged that it was Bill. But really, thought Ralph, this was not Bill. This was a savage whose image refused to blend with that ancient picture of a boy in shorts and shirt” (184).
As for Jack, he was looking to be the ringleader and when he is not, he decides the boys should dedicate their time to hunting food on the island. Ralph was a true leader and without him, civilization would not have been a
In the book Lord of the Flies there are two boy who try and fight for the role as chief one who is voted into power and another who pushes others into accepting him as their leader. Ralph the chief who is intent on being rescued and Jack the boy who believes that he is a strong warrior that can face anything. As the story goes along, both boys face trying times that show that almost anyone can become savage when abandoned by society. The two boys show strengths and weakness throughout the story, showing you that everyone when put in a situation can be a leader, whether it be good or bad. Ralph and Jack both have two very different ways of looking at the situation of being stranded on an island.
