The Case of Jack Merridew The murders of Piggy and Simon have not gone unnoticed, and the kids from the island are all under question for their untimely deaths. The main suspect for their murders is Jack Merridew, one of the older boys on the island. The story originates in a book called The Lord of the Flies written by William Golding, about young boys who are stranded on the island. Jack is one of the older, more savage of the bunch, but he seems to be ill in the brain.
In the novel Lord of the Flies, it is obvious that the character Jack is the savage compared to all the other boys on the island. Jack is the cause of all the arguments and death that will later occur on the island. Many of the boys on the island are scared of Jack when he acts cruel and selfish. This makes them join his group, so they don't have to worry about getting hurt. During a group meeting Jack says “We shall take fire from the others,” (Golding 161).
Lord of the Flies Jack represents being power hungry and disobedient for the incorrect reasons In the book Lord of the flies, there are several things that connect the earth right now and human expertise. In the book most of the boys go through a phase that they never went through before, through out the book they're going through a "animal-like" phase that I feel the reader does not expect from them. I decided a decision} to concentrate on Jack because I believe that he was a lot more animal-like then the other boys because of that I think he extremely stands out because of his actions and feelings he made the other boys animal-like. I feel this is often necessary as a result of the influence he created on the other boys is quite like
Lastly, Jack is known as the rebel of the story who disagrees with the leaders, and is pure evil from middle to end. Although Jack is evil, his bad character trait ensures his survival and alliance with the boys. The first example of when Jack’s evilness is shown in the story is when Jack hunts the pig and puts its head on a stick, the line says “ Jack held the head up and jammed the soft throat down on the pointed end of the stick which pierced through into the mouth. He stood back and the head hung there, a little blood dribbling down the stick” ( Golding, 150). This shows Jack’s evilness because instead of fearing the beast he is offering him the head of the pig that he just brutally murdered.
In the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding, many young boys became stranded on a deserted island without any grownups. In the beginning, Ralph, the leader, warns everyone about the importance of having a fire with smoke in order for ships to find them. Not everyone agrees with his philosophy though; some think finding food is a more urgent matter. These boys create their own tribe led by a young boy named Jack. Through the development of Jack Merridew’s characterization, the author shows that humans will succumb to their animalistic ways when they do not have a set government.
In the novel “Lord of the Flies” by William Golding the ultimate one responsible for the destruction of the island is Jack. In the novel Golding has wrote about how a group of british boys crashed on a plane and landed on a island where there are no adults,just little british boys stranded on a island .In the beginning one of the boys Ralph was the responsible leader where he knew what to do an how to manage. But of course there was this one cureles jealous boy that wanted to be a leader,the one in charge. Because of how ruthless and savage Jack was he took the fear that the boys had within them and used it against them to make them join his tribe which started the destruction of the island.
Ralph- Overall Ralph is a pretty independent character. He was elected the leader of the boys at the beginning of the story. Ralph is a natural born leader and has influences over the other boys. Ralph has the conch shell which symbolizes a sense of power, he blows the conch shell to assemble all the boys together to meet. Without Ralph it is very unlikely the boys would have a leader and be as organized.
Simon’s Transition from Quiet Boy to the Establishment of Empathy In William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, Simon’s transition from laconic youth to the short-lived establishment of empathy creates the subtle upending of the island’s makeshift civilization. Simon is repeatedly shown to be the only boy to show compassion and direct kindness towards anyone else. The shy boy does this at personal risk to himself. The most evident of these instances is in Chapter Four after the hunters have retrieved a pig and Jack is attempting to intimidate Piggy by withholding his share.
Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, a Russian novelist and historian once said,”The battle line between good and evil runs through the heart of every man.” In William Golding’s novel Lord of the flies, Jack, the supposedly good former choirmaster and student leader, is a representative of evil and violence when tempted by savagery and greed. Jack has the major authority and develops a higher status compared to other characters in the novel. He is a born leader who carries out his concerns over various problems, however the abusive use of power leads him towards the evil path. Golding has effectively used figurative devices such as a beast metaphor, colour symbolism , controlling tone, imagery of Jack’s appearance and environment to demonstrate his desire of power and devolving character.
In the midst of the 1950 's, the Cold War begins. While in that period, William Golding creates Lord of the Flies published in 1954. This is a novel about young school boys crash landing on an island. The boys on the island let the fear of something inside of them be in control. In the story, there are lots of events that take place and characters that take part.
In The lord of the flies, Piggy is a Character that is willing to stand up for the right thing and what is best for the group. Piggy is this type of character because he will make sure he is respected, and he is being listened to. When he was trying to talk “Piggy came and stood outside the triangle. This indicated that he wished to listen, but would not speak; and piggy intended it as a gesture of disapproval. ‘The thing is: we need an assembly.’” (78).
Simon stands out from the other boys, and this difference develops one dimension of his portrayal as a prophet. For example, as Ralph, Jack, and Simon venture out to explore the island for the first time, Jack remarks that he and Ralph “could talk over [Simon’s] head” (24) while Simon walks between them. By creating the image of Jack and Ralph overlooking Simon, Golding depicts him as ignored and the odd one out in the trio. As the boys then continue with their exploration, Simon often falls behind and “ha[s] to do a double shuffle to catch up with the others” (24). Simon is not only literally out of step, but he exerts a great effort in order to keep up with the group which demonstrates his struggle be seen as an equal rather than an outcast.
Jack has changed greatly, over the course of William Golding’s novel, Lord of the Flies. Crashing onto an island without adults and having to survive put a strain on all of the boys, but Jack’s personality altered the most due to this experience. He went from living as an ambitious choir boy, to being a vicious, brutal, beast. Many things changed Jack on the island, but most of all, he created the monster he became.
When Ralph declares Jack the head of hunters, Jack takes this power to another level of jealousy and greed and becomes savage. After he kills his first pig he puts blood on his face and creates a mask. Jack's hunters immediately follow his footsteps creating what appears to be an army with Jack as the general. Having an army eventually leads to having a war which happens towards the end of the book. This represents a futuristic nuclear war which is happening while the boys are stranded on the island.
William Golding’s twisted novel Lord of the Flies is comprised of numerous young boys that become stranded on a deserted island. Ungoverned and isolated from principles of society, the boys are left to fend for themselves. Although many characters exhibit uncivilized behavior, Jack’s primitive demeanor undeniably makes him the most interesting character. Jack’s need to be the most powerful person on the island makes him the most fascinating character.
