In the book Lord of the Flies, a large group of boys were found stranded on an island with only the land and themselves as resources.One boy in particular, Jack, decided he wanted to be the leader of the boys, and he did everything in his power to obtain that position. Because of this, Jack’s personality is defined as an ESTP. These four letters determine how a person’s psychological preference and how they see the world. His personality spelled out would be: Extroversion, Sensing, Thinking, and Perceiving. An extrovert lives in the outside world. These people are perceived to be more bold and outgoing. An introvert, in contrast prefers to live inside their mind. They are seen as more quiet and shy. Jack shows the traits of an extrovert from the very beginning. His bravery and outgoingness could be seen throughout the book. When he said, ““I ought to be chief,” said Jack with simple arrogance, “because I’m chapter chorister and head boy. I can sing C sharp””(Goulding 28), his words show that he is not afraid to volunteer himself as a leader. This quote puts Jack’s braveness on display. He is able to get most of the boys to leave Ralph and follow him instead. He received respect from all of his boys because he appealed to their . Two of his boys said “The Chief has spoken” (Goulding 202), meaning that those two, along with the other boys obey Jack’s every command. This incident never happened when Ralph was Chief. However, although he is able to lead the boys, his “short term sight” will only strand the boys on the island. Piggy once said to Ralph that “If Jack was chief he’d have all hunting and no fire. We’d be here till we died”(Goulding 131).This comes from Jack’s inability to see long term effects and only focus on the present situation. Although his personality helps him gain power over people, he does not know how to use the
