Jackie Robinson Jackie Robinson is one of the most well known persons in American history. He started the path for blacks to be seen equal as whites, because he was the first black person to play for a Major League Baseball team. He stayed strong during all the racial comments he got while on and off of the team. Without Jackie Robinson, blacks still might not have been allowed in professional sports. Jackie Robinson's childhood and early baseball years in the Negro Leagues, helped him prepare for playing in the Major Leagues and breaking the color barrier, and even campaigning against drugs later after his baseball career; these things are the reasons he is still remembered today by both whites and blacks and is a good example for us. Robinson played for the Kansas City Monarchs in the Negro Leagues. Robinson played very well in the Negro Leagues, so that’s how president Branch Rickey found Robinson. He then offered him the chance to play for the Brooklyn Dodgers. Rickey wanted a competitive, yet able to control his temper, and good baseball player to break the color barrier and play for the Dodgers. The scouts saw Robinson and showed him to Branch Rickey and they decided he was just perfect. Robinson signed the contract as long, as for three years he wouldn’t respond to any racial comment, no matter how bad it was( “Negro Leagues: Jackie Robinson”). They call the day Jackie Robinson Day. On that day, teams from both leagues, in honor of Jackie Robinson, wear the number 42. (“ Jackie Robinson Day”) Robinson's number was the first number ever retired by every single team in the league.(History.com Staff “ Jackie Robinson breaks color barrier”) Robinson was also the first baseball player put on a stamp, either black or white.
