In Matt McCarthy’s “Nap Time”, he discusses the “most mysterious” of all needs - sleep. McCarthy uses the story of Mike Napoli to introduce this topic. Napoli’s story of his struggle with sleep apnea includes some bizarre elements. Firstly, he cites his “first dream in a decade” that he can actually remember (p. 49).
In the article, “Our Kids Need More Sleep”, written by Valerie Erde, the author talks about school timing and discusses her opinion on whether it should be pushed back or remain the same. Erde mentions how if students get more sleep, they can report to school on time more often and also be ready to learn at all times. Because of this, she and others believe that school should not start as early as it does. I agree that students need more sleep but I do not agree with her on changing the school timing because kids would still not get enough sleep
As the initiative is run through the school the child goes to, the staff of Healthy Harold do not care for any of the above factors as long as the students learn the correct information that is supplied on the syllabus. If the child does not speak English, the school will contact the Healthy Harold educators to warn them of the issue, they will then send somebody who can speak that language or if that translator is unavailable, they will send over a teachers resource that the teacher can read and help explain it to the child. The Seems The Glitch in Sleep chapters 9-11 pages 165-213 “The Seems The Glitch in Sleep” by John Hulme and Michael Wexler. I think the main message is don’t give up. I think this because the glitch is very hard to fix, and Becker, Simly and Casey didn’t give up to fix it even though they don’t have much time left. Becker and Simly was in Dominic Dozenski’s office, Dominic is the administrator of the Department of Sleep. They were in his office because they were in trouble.
Alan Derickson discusses the issue of sleep deprivation and the importance of wakefulness in the United States and more particularly the United States armed forces during and after World War II. Derickson begins with the move from daytime warfare to nighttime warfare as a main cause of the sleep deprivation in American soldiers. The increase in technology in the early 20th century and the enemies on the Pacific front are two main causes for nighttime warfare. Attacks and missions had started to be carried out during the night under the cover of darkness, requiring soldiers to sacrifice their sleep for that time. Leonard Cohen's poem "Two went to sleep" is a glamorous depiction of lost feelings. Cohen plays well by repeatedly using key phrases like "two went to sleep" at the beginning of each stanza and "one dreamed." Cohen shows how, after years of marriage, two lovers, or perhaps ex-lovers, have settled into a routine, or rather, a standard tradition, by cleverly using dreams. He takes the reader on a journey through the night-time adventures of one and the other's imagination, and the incoherence and randomness of the two can be clearly seen.
Stage one is the beginning of the sleep cycle. It is a light stage of sleep. Stage one can be a transition period between wakefulness and sleep. The brain produces high amplitude theta waves. This period of sleep lasts around five to ten minutes.
2 Sleep Deprivation in the Nursing Profession Sleep deprivation is known as a condition of not getting enough sleep that can affect the brain and cognitive functions. "It occurs when a person sleeps for fewer hours than necessary over multiple days or week" (Eanes, 2015). When we think of nurses we are reminded of people who promote the health of others. However, many are unknowingly compromising their own health by working those 12-hour shifts. Many times, its more than 12 hours when they are finally able to go home.
Sleep Journal and Reflection Paper Amber Ivy American Public University System Before, during, and after the logging of my sleep journal, I learned an abundance of information about myself in accordance to the dreams I had been having. The last ten days I logged what I was eating, when I went to bed, how many times I woke up during the night, and when I woke up for the day. As soon as I woke up for the day, I wrote as much as I could remember about the dream/ s I had.
Throughout the week my sleep patterns have varied. A few of the nights I sleep great and got over eight hours of sleep, and four of the days I got less than six hours of sleep. I noticed during the week on the nights I have a lot of homework, I do not get a ton of sleep, and the nights I don’t have a lot of homework I tend to get more. The night I get the most sleep is Friday night into Saturday morning because that is my day to sleep in. During the week, I get up early for either work or school, and on Sundays I get up early for church.
