In the short story, “The Lottery”, by Shirley Jackson shows the theme of The Duality of Human Nature. The character Tesse Hutchinson did not agree with “The Lottery” she thought it wasn’t fair. In the story Tesse Hutchinson husband got picked to be killed and that was when she said it wasn’t fair.
The Lottery, an established tradition that involves the sacrifice of a person is awful to the normal person. However, on judgement day, Tessie Hutchinson forgets about the ritual and instead was washing the dishes. She arrived at the practice late, not bothered about the circumstances. The town accepts the tradition, seemingly a normal practice that everyone upholds without questions. However, when Tessie was chosen, suddenly her outlook on this terrifying tradition changes.
Tessie Hutchinson is the only villager who protests against the Lottery. When the Hutchinson family draws the marked paper, Tessie exclaims: “It wasn’t fair!”. But her fight is not supported by her family and people around. Her voice is ignored even her husband asks her to be quiet. This refrain continues as she is selected and subsequently stoned to death, but people are always selfish.
Tessie Hutchinson was forced to partake in the lottery against her will. Many times she exclaimed how she thought it was unfair. Tessie screamed, “It isn’t fair, it isn’t right” (Jackson 7). The author goes on to say that the townspeople began to advance on her, and they got their stones ready. This was one of the many times Tessie explained how she thought that the lottery was unfair, and that it wasn’t necessary.

There is only one villager who would be disappointed and maybe mad if the lottery ended, Old Man Henry. The text shows this when the other villagers are talking about stopping lotteries and he says that it would be trouble if they did that. Also Old Man Henry has been participating in lotteries for seventy-seven years, he would be mad if the village broke the tradition. The young kids in the story seem to slightly enjoy the lottery. The text supports this statement when the kids are all running around and collecting rocks and guarding their piles.
She realizes that this is an unpleasurable and outdated tradition and should be forgotten only because she got chosen. However, if her family’s name wasn’t drawn, she would have blindly followed the ritual, thrilled to have escaped a gruesome, sacrificial death. As a reader it is easy to empathize for Tessie since she or others don’t have a voice in their community or are even able to look at the bigger picture and see that the lottery is unnecessary. Not only does the dramatic irony of the lottery allow the reader to understand Tessie’s view, it creates a similar feeling towards Bill Hutchinson. People throughout America had different views on how to end segregation, as each state had its own background with segregation and slavery. Oklahoma although it prided itself on never being a slave state it still had segregation, from the 1920s to when schools and public places began to be integrated in the 1960s. In the earlier phases in segregation practices in Oklahoma you could find the Ku Klux Klan marching through downtown Oklahoma City, people recognized and supported the Klan. The Klan recruited Public High School students to join their patronage against the African American community. Jackson takes the old-fashioned approach and seems more content with the irony of the word “lottery”. The irony of the how Jackson used the word “lottery” suggests that the villagers are going to draw for a prize. The character that stands out in the story is Tessie Hutchinson. Tessie is said to be the representative of the community because she has no issue with the town’s practice. Until it falls on her spouse who she blames for drawing the winning lottery ticket that made her family the unlucky losers.
Traditions are greatly valued within societies and are a connection to the early ages of a culture. Overtime the morals of individuals change and develop, but when a tradition fails to match the transitioning morals of a society, problems form. This occurs in Shirley Jackson’s short story “The Lottery” when people in a village are too brainwashed by the past to see the brutal truth of their actions. Every year a lottery takes place that ends with a murder at the hands of the family, friends, and neighbors of the victim. In “The Lottery” Jackson uses symbolism as a tool to illustrate the change in the village.

The traditional belief upheld by the agrarian village in Jackson's story is human sacrifice, which aims at satisfying their gods so that they may have a copious harvest. When the lottery session determined that Tessie Hutchinson won the lottery, she said in response, "it isn't fair." This annual lottery reveals the negative aspects of this town’s Tradition, Savagery, Barbarism, and cold-heartedness. In this paper I will show why this town blindly follows these customs, not because it’s a tradition but because of the accepting wickedness that can be shown. Why does the town follow this foolish tradition? Throughout “The Lottery” the narrator tells that the people do not remember how the lottery began, and that some of the older people believe the lottery has changed over the years, that now people just want to get it over with as fast as possible.
